Biography

Short Description

Saints Socrates and Stephen are a pair of Christian martyrs commemorated in the Roman Martyrology on 17 September. The official entry records them with the words 'In Britain, the holy martyrs Socrates and Stephen.' This short notice constitutes virtually the entire historical record concerning the two saints. No contemporary account of their lives, trial, or death has survived, and later hagiographical literature did not develop a legendary cycle around them.

They are always named together, implying that they were regarded as companions in martyrdom. The names Socrates and Stephen were both in use among Christians of the late Roman period, the former of Greek philosophical origin and the latter meaning 'crown' in Greek, yet they yield no further information about the martyrs' origins, social status, or ethnicity. Historians therefore cannot determine whether the pair were natives of Britain or missionaries or visitors who died there.

The date of their martyrdom is unknown. While it is possible that they perished during one of the imperial persecutions of the third or early fourth century, no evidence confirms this or any other specific context. The reference to Britain in the martyrology associates their cult with the Roman province of Britannia or its later Christian communities, but no particular town, cemetery, or shrine can be identified as the site of their death or burial.

In subsequent centuries the same brief commemoration was copied into various medieval martyrologies without the addition of biographical detail. Socrates and Stephen never became the objects of a widespread popular cult, nor are they known to have been adopted as patrons of any place, profession, or cause. Their feast remains 17 September in the Roman Martyrology, a liturgical remembrance of two otherwise anonymous witnesses whose memory was preserved even after all particulars of their lives had been lost.
