Biography

Short Description

The name Sofronij (also written Sofroniy, Sofronije, Sophronius, or Sophronios) is the Slavic form of the Greek personal name Sophronios, meaning one who is of sound mind or temperate. It has been borne by a number of Eastern Christian monks, parish clergy, bishops, and saints, especially in the Orthodox churches of the Balkans, the East Slavs, and the Near East. The identifier Q23658944 points to one specific person recorded under this name, but standard historical and hagiographical reference works do not, on the name and identifier alone, yield a securely distinguishable life that can be separated from other men called Sofronij. Dates and places of birth and death, burial, family, and office are therefore left blank rather than borrowed from a better-known namesake.

Several churchmen of this name are well attested and must not be conflated. In the late eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries, Stoyko Vladislavov of Kotel, later Bishop Sofroniy of Vratsa, was a leading figure of the Bulgarian National Revival: a married parish priest who after widowhood took monastic vows, served as bishop, and wrote the autobiographical Life and Sufferings of Sinful Sofroniy. In the Russian Church, Sophronius of Irkutsk, an eighteenth-century missionary bishop in Siberia, is venerated as a saint. In the seventh century, Sophronius of Jerusalem was Patriarch of Jerusalem and a principal opponent of monothelitism. South Slavic traditions also remember monks and hierarchs named Sofronije. These lives belong to different centuries, regions, and ranks; none of them can be assigned to Q23658944 without independent confirmation from the item’s own sources and sitelinks.

In Eastern Orthodox custom the name Sofronij is often a monastic name received at tonsure, replacing a baptismal name. Orthodox bishops are taken from among celibate monks or widowed priests who have been tonsured, so a bishop of this name would have been unmarried after profession, though he might earlier have had a wife and children if he had first served as a married parish priest. Without knowing whether the subject of Q23658944 was a monk, a bishop, a patriarch, or a layman, marital status, children, religious order, and hierarchical rank cannot be stated. Feast days, patronages, and acts of canonization or beatification attach to particular saints and cannot be transferred from one Sofronij to another.

No Bishop of Rome and no Coptic Pope of Alexandria is commonly identified under the Slavic form Sofronij, so a papal office can be excluded. Whether this individual ever held a patriarchal or catholicosal see remains unknown. Further identification would require the Wikidata item Q23658944 itself and the scholarly or ecclesiastical citations attached to it. Until that identification is secure, only the masculine gender of the name and the general Eastern Christian onomastic setting can be affirmed with confidence.
