Biography

Short Description

Manuela Torres Acosta was born in Madrid on 2 December 1826, the second of five children of Francisco Torres and Antonia Acosta, modest shopkeepers in the Spanish capital. She was raised in a devout Catholic household, received a basic education, and from an early age showed a marked inclination to prayer and works of charity. She hoped to enter the Dominican convent of Santo Domingo el Real in Madrid, but was refused because of frail health. Remaining with her family, she continued a life of piety while assisting in the household and waiting for another path into religious life.

In 1851 the Servite priest Miguel Martínez y Sanz, then working in Madrid’s Chamberí district, gathered a small group of women to nurse the sick poor in their own homes, a ministry then little organized in Spain. Seven young women responded; among them was Manuela, who took the religious name María Soledad. The community was established on 15 August 1851 as the Servants of Mary, Ministers to the Sick, following a rule inspired by Servite tradition and committing themselves to day-and-night attendance on the ill, especially those who could not afford hospital care.

The infant congregation soon met severe trials. In 1856 Father Martínez left Spain for missionary work in Fernando Póo, leaving the sisters without their founder. Internal discord and calumnies led to María Soledad’s temporary removal as superior; she accepted the humiliation quietly and continued to serve. After an investigation she was restored as superior general. Under her leadership the community obtained diocesan approval, opened further houses in Spain, and later received a decree of praise from the Holy See. The sisters became known for nursing victims of epidemics, including cholera, at considerable personal risk.

María Soledad governed the congregation for more than three decades, forming her sisters in humility, obedience, and unstinting service to the sick. She died in Madrid on 11 October 1887. Her cause was later introduced; she was beatified by Pope Pius XII on 5 February 1950 and canonized by Pope Paul VI on 25 January 1970. Her feast is kept on 11 October. The Sisters Servants of Mary continue her work of home nursing in many countries.
