Biography

Short Description

Solomonia Yuryevna Saburova was a Muscovite grand princess of the early sixteenth century and the first wife of Grand Prince Vasili III of Moscow. She is venerated by the Russian Orthodox Church as Saint Sophia of Suzdal. Born in the late fifteenth century into the Saburov boyar family, she belonged to a clan that had risen in princely service; the Saburovs claimed descent from a Tatar murza named Chet who had accepted Orthodox baptism in an earlier century and entered the service of the Russian princes. Her father, Yuri Konstantinovich Saburov, was a member of this service aristocracy. In 1505 Solomonia was selected as a bride for Vasili Ivanovich, son and heir of Ivan III, in a bride-show of the kind then customary at the Muscovite court. The marriage took place in 1505, the same year in which Vasili succeeded as Grand Prince of Moscow.

The union lasted some twenty years and produced no children. In a political culture in which the continuity of the ruling dynasty was treated as a matter of public necessity, the couple's childlessness became a grave concern of state. Vasili III resolved to put his wife away in order to remarry. In 1525 Solomonia was compelled to accept monastic tonsure and received the name Sophia. Contemporary accounts indicate that she did not enter religion willingly. The grand prince's divorce and the forced profession of his wife divided opinion among the clergy and the boyars. Metropolitan Varlaam, who had resisted the prince on this and other matters, had already been removed; his successor, Metropolitan Daniel, sanctioned the new marriage. Critics of the divorce included the monk Maximus the Greek and Vassian Patrikeyev. After her tonsure Solomonia was associated first with a convent in Moscow and was then established at the Convent of the Intercession of the Theotokos (the Pokrovsky Monastery) in Suzdal, a house with close ties to the ruling family.

Vasili III married Elena Glinskaya, who in 1530 gave birth to a son, Ivan, later known as Ivan IV. A later legend, which historians do not accept as established fact, claimed that Solomonia had been pregnant when she was tonsured and that she bore a son named George (Yuri) in the monastery, a child who was then concealed; popular tradition sometimes connected this figure with the folkloric outlaw Kudeyar. No reliable contemporary evidence confirms the birth. Solomonia spent the rest of her life as a nun at Suzdal. She died in 1542 and was buried at the Intercession Convent.

Local veneration of Sophia of Suzdal grew after her death, and miracles were reported at her tomb. She came to be honored as a saint in the Russian Orthodox Church. Her principal commemorations fall on 16 December and 1 August. Her relics remained connected with the Suzdal convent, which continued to be the center of her cult. In historical memory she stands as a grand princess whose marriage was sacrificed to dynastic policy, and as a monastic saint whose life after 1525 was spent in enforced but enduring religious profession in one of the principal convents of sixteenth-century Muscovy.
