Biography

Short Description

Sosthenes of Chalcedon is remembered in the ancient martyrological tradition of the Church as a Christian who suffered martyrdom at Chalcedon in Bithynia during the Great Persecution under the Roman emperor Diocletian. The city of Chalcedon lay on the Asian side of the Bosporus, opposite Byzantium, in what was then the Roman province of Bithynia et Pontus. The Roman Martyrology commemorates him on 10 September together with a companion named Victor, stating that in the persecution of Diocletian they overcame chains and wild beasts and completed their martyrdom by fire. No full passio or contemporary court record of their trial has been preserved, and therefore almost all personal details of Sosthenes’ life remain unknown.

The Diocletianic persecution, launched by a series of edicts beginning in 303, was especially rigorously applied in the eastern half of the empire. Christians were required to sacrifice to the gods or face confiscation, imprisonment, torture, and death. Exposure to wild beasts in the amphitheatre and condemnation to the flames were among the penalties attested for obstinate Christians in this period. The notice that the beasts would not harm Sosthenes and Victor is a recurrent motif in early martyr acts; whether taken literally or as a hagiographical expression of divine protection, it indicates that the tradition remembered a prolonged ordeal rather than a swift execution. Chalcedon possessed a Christian community of sufficient size and visibility to produce martyrs, a fact consistent with the later prominence of the city as an episcopal see and as the location of the Fourth Ecumenical Council in 451, though that council occurred long after these events and is not connected with Sosthenes himself.

It is important to distinguish this Sosthenes from other early Christian figures of the same name. The New Testament mentions a Sosthenes who was a ruler of the synagogue at Corinth and who was beaten before the proconsul Gallio (Acts 18:17), as well as a Sosthenes who appears as co-sender of the First Letter to the Corinthians (1 Cor 1:1). Later Eastern tradition numbered a Sosthenes among the Seventy Apostles and sometimes assigned him the see of Colophon in Ionia. None of these identifications can be verified for the martyr of Chalcedon, and they belong to different centuries and regions. No ancient source describes the Chalcedonian Sosthenes as a bishop, priest, or monk, nor does any reliable text record his parentage, place of birth, or marital status.

The cult of Sosthenes and Victor is of the type historians term pre-congregational: it arose from local veneration and from inclusion in early martyrologies such as those that fed into the Hieronymian Martyrology and, eventually, the Roman Martyrology, rather than from a formal canonization process conducted by a medieval or modern pope. No feast-day proper to particular religious orders, no widespread patronages of places, professions, or ailments, and no historically attested burial site or relic translation are associated with him in the standard hagiographical collections. The memory of Sosthenes therefore rests almost entirely on the brief, sober entry of the martyrology, which is sufficient to place him among the martyrs of Bithynia in the early fourth century but does not permit a fuller biographical reconstruction.
