Biography

Short Description

Sosthenes is a figure of the mid-first century associated with the synagogue and the nascent Christian community at Corinth. In the Acts of the Apostles he is named as the ruler of the synagogue (archisynagogos) at the time of the Apostle Paul's activity in that city, during the proconsulship of Gallio. Local Jews brought Paul before Gallio's tribunal on the charge that he was persuading people to worship God contrary to the law. Gallio declined to hear the matter, treating it as an internal Jewish dispute rather than a question of Roman law. After the case was dismissed, Sosthenes was seized and beaten before the judgment seat. The Greek text of Acts leaves the identity of the assailants somewhat ambiguous across manuscript traditions, and Gallio is said to have paid no attention to the violence. Nothing in the New Testament states Sosthenes' birthplace, parentage, or earlier career; his appearance is confined to this Corinthian episode and to a later greeting.

The name Sosthenes occurs again in the opening of the First Epistle to the Corinthians, where Paul writes as "Paul, called to be an apostle of Jesus Christ through the will of God, and Sosthenes our brother." From an early period Christian readers have often identified this co-sender of the letter with the synagogue ruler of Acts, taking the identification to mean that Sosthenes had become a Christian and a companion of Paul, possibly while Paul was in Ephesus. The name itself is a fairly common Greek one meaning roughly "safe in strength," and modern scholarship remains divided on whether the two New Testament references denote one man or two. If they are the same person, the letter would place Sosthenes with Paul some years after the Gallio incident, already recognized as a brother in the faith. The New Testament itself supplies no further biographical detail, no account of a conversion scene, and no information about family, marriage, or children.

Later ecclesiastical tradition, especially in the East, numbered Sosthenes among the Seventy Apostles or Seventy Disciples of Luke's Gospel and described him as bishop of Colophon in Ionia. The Roman Martyrology commemorates him on 28 November as a disciple of Paul who was converted by the apostle and afterwards made bishop of Colophon. In the Eastern Orthodox calendar he is remembered on 4 January with the rest of the Seventy and on 8 December together with Apollos, Cephas, Tychicus, Epaphroditus, Caesar, and Onesiphorus. These episcopal and apostolic identifications do not appear in the canonical New Testament; they belong to hagiographical development of the early centuries rather than to contemporary record. No reliable ancient source records the place or date of his birth or death, the location of his burial, or any patronage attached to his name. His historical footprint therefore remains the two brief New Testament notices and the subsequent pious tradition that grew around them.
