Biography

Saint Sperandia, also called Sperandea in some Latin and Italian sources, was a Benedictine nun and abbess of the thirteenth century, associated principally with the town of Cingoli in the Marche of central Italy. She was born in 1216 at Gubbio in Umbria. Later tradition describes her family as of some standing and claims kinship with Saint Ubald (Ubaldo), the twelfth-century bishop of Gubbio whose cult was already well established in her native city. Independent archival evidence for her parentage and childhood is lacking; what is known of her early life comes from hagiographical notices compiled in connection with her local cult. Those notices portray a young woman inclined to prayer, fasting, and pilgrimage rather than to marriage or a secular career.

According to the same tradition, Sperandia left Gubbio to visit shrines and holy places before taking the monastic habit. She entered a Benedictine community at Cingoli, commonly identified as the monastery of Saint Michael (San Michele). Living under the Rule of Saint Benedict, she was in time elected abbess. As abbess she is remembered for strict personal austerity, regular observance of the Divine Office, and attention to the poor of Cingoli. Writers of the cult emphasize her hidden life of penance and charity rather than a public apostolate. No contemporary papal or episcopal acta concerning her government of the monastery have come to light, and the picture of her abbacy remains that of local pious memory.

Sperandia died at Cingoli on 11 September 1276 and was buried in the church of her monastery. Devotion to her developed in the town and the surrounding Marche. She is honored as the patron saint of Cingoli. Her remains, long described in local tradition as incorrupt, are preserved in the church that now bears her name, the Chiesa di Santa Sperandia in Cingoli. Her feast day is 11 September. She is listed among the saints of the region in later martyrologies and diocesan calendars.

Because she lived before the regularization of canonization procedures, her recognition as a saint rests on immemorial cult and subsequent liturgical acceptance rather than on a documented papal canonization of the modern type. Scholarly literature on her is limited; she remains an obscure figure outside the local history of Gubbio and Cingoli, and cautious accounts distinguish the few chronological facts—birth at Gubbio, monastic life and death at Cingoli in 1276—from the legendary elaborations that grew up around her tomb.
