Biography

Short Description

Saint Spyridon (also spelled Spiridion or Spyridon of Trimythous) was a fourth-century bishop of Trimythous (Tremithus) on the island of Cyprus, venerated as a wonderworker in both the Eastern Orthodox and Roman Catholic churches. Later hagiographical tradition places his birth in the village of Assia in Cyprus in the later third century. According to these accounts he lived as a shepherd and farmer, was married, and had a daughter named Irene. After his wife’s death he continued a life of marked simplicity and prayer. His reputation for holiness led to his election as bishop of Trimythous, a modest see in Cyprus. Even as bishop he is said to have gone on tending flocks and to have dressed in the humble manner of a shepherd, wearing a woven rush cap that became a distinctive feature of his later iconography.

Near-contemporary church historians mention him, though they do not supply a full biography. Sozomen, writing in the fifth century, describes Spyridon as a Cypriot bishop of rustic simplicity who remained engaged in agricultural work, was known for hospitality, and performed miracles, including raising his daughter from the dead in order to ask her where a deposit of valuables had been hidden. Socrates Scholasticus likewise treats him as a holy bishop of the Nicene generation. Eastern tradition associates him with the First Council of Nicaea in 325. A later and widely repeated story relates that he confounded an Arian philosopher by squeezing a potsherd or baked brick so that fire rose, water flowed out, and clay remained in his hand, a simple image of the Trinity. His name does not appear in every surviving list of Nicene attendees, and the brick miracle is a subsequent hagiographical development rather than a documented conciliar episode.

The later vitae, including material associated with Theodore of Paphos and subsequent synaxaria, attribute many further miracles to him: healings, exorcisms, the ending of a drought in Cyprus, the conversion of a snake into gold to relieve a poor man, and various acts of justice and hospitality. These narratives present him as a model of the unlettered but Spirit-filled bishop of the early church. Traditional chronology places his death in 348 at Trimythous. He was first buried there. His relics were later translated to Constantinople and, after the Ottoman capture of that city in 1453, were brought to Corfu (Kerkyra). They are still enshrined, and regarded as incorrupt, in the Church of Saint Spyridon in Corfu Town.

On Corfu he became the island’s principal patron and is credited in local memory with several historical interventions, including deliverance from plague in the seventeenth century and protection during Ottoman attacks. He is commemorated on 12 December in the Eastern Orthodox Church and on 14 December in the Roman Martyrology. Icons typically show him as a bishop wearing a shepherd’s cap, holding a Gospel book, and sometimes with the brick of the Trinitarian miracle. His cult is especially strong in Greece, Cyprus, and among Orthodox communities more widely. Formal papal canonization in the later medieval or modern sense does not apply; his veneration is ancient and of the pre-congregation type.
