Biography

Short Description

Saint Buriana (also recorded as Buryan, Buriena, Beriana, or Berriona) is an early medieval saint whose cult is centred on the parish of St Buryan in the Penwith peninsula of western Cornwall. Reliable contemporary evidence for her life does not survive. Later medieval tradition, however, consistently presents her as an Irishwoman of the fifth or sixth century who crossed the sea to Britain and lived as a hermit at the site that afterwards took her name. William Worcester, travelling in Cornwall in 1478, was informed that she was the daughter of a king of Ireland and that her body rested in the parish church. The Exeter Calendar of Martyrology likewise classifies her as an Irish saint who came to Cornwall. These notices, though late, are the principal written authorities for her identity and origin.

Her settlement belongs to the well-attested movement of Irish monks, nuns, and hermits into Dumnonia during the so-called Age of the Saints. In that period numerous oratories and cells were established along the Cornish coast, many of them later developing into parish churches. Nothing certain is known of Buriana’s companions, the form of her ascetic life, or the year of her death. She is remembered simply as a virgin hermit. No early vita, miracle collection, or liturgical office of independent historical value has come down, and modern historians therefore treat the biographical particulars as legendary accretions around a genuine local cult rather than as a recoverable narrative.

Royal interest in the shrine is documented in the tenth century. King Athelstan, following his campaigns in the south-west of Britain, is credited with founding a collegiate church of secular canons at St Buryan in honour of the saint, probably in the early 930s. The foundation was endowed with rights of sanctuary and enjoyed a distinctive legal status as a royal peculiar, remaining for centuries outside the ordinary jurisdiction of the Bishop of Exeter. The place-name itself, recorded in forms that reflect the Cornish Eglosveryan (church of Buriana), is among the earliest witnesses to her cult. The present parish church, largely a fifteenth-century rebuilding, occupies the traditional site of her burial.

Buriana’s feast has been kept on 1 May in several martyrologies and local calendars, although other dates occur in Cornish usage. She was never formally canonized by a pope; her sanctity rests on ancient popular and diocesan veneration of the kind typical of the early Celtic and Anglo-Saxon churches. Apart from the village and parish of St Buryan she has no widely recognized patronages of trades, illnesses, or other places. The historical figure remains obscure, yet the continuity of dedication from at least the tenth century to the present demonstrates the persistence of her memory in far-western Cornwall.
