Biography

Short Description

Teresa Jornet Ibars, known in religion as Teresa of Jesus Jornet, was born on 9 January 1843 in Aytona (Aitona) in the province of Lleida, Catalonia, Spain, the daughter of Francisco Jornet and Antonieta Ibars. She grew up in a devout Catholic family and from an early age showed a marked piety and a practical concern for the poor. She received a solid education, qualified as a teacher, and taught in Lleida and in her native town, where she also opened a school. Related to the Discalced Carmelite Blessed Francisco Palau, she felt drawn to contemplative religious life and sought admission to Carmel, but poor health prevented her from being accepted. She became a member of the Third Order of Saint Francis while continuing her work as an educator and her informal service to people in need.

In the early 1870s, under the spiritual direction of the priest Saturnino López Novoa, she turned her attention to elderly men and women who had been abandoned and left without care. In 1872 she and a small group of companions began to receive and tend such persons in Barbastro. That work became the congregation of the Little Sisters of the Abandoned Elderly (Hermanitas de los Ancianos Desamparados). She took the religious name Teresa of Jesus and served as the first superior general. The community soon established its principal house in Valencia, which became the motherhouse. Houses were opened across Spain to shelter and nurse the aged poor, combining a simple, family-style common life with a practical apostolate of hospitality and nursing.

As superior she insisted on poverty, humility, and a household spirit in the communities, so that the elderly would be treated as members of a family rather than as inmates of an institution. She visited foundations, formed novices, and obtained ecclesiastical approvals for the institute as it grew. Recurring illness, including tuberculosis, marked her later years, yet she continued to govern the congregation until near the end of her life. She died on 26 August 1897 at the community’s house in Llíria, in the province of Valencia, at the age of fifty-four.

Devotion to her spread within the congregation and among those who had known her work with the abandoned aged. She was beatified by Pope Pius XII on 27 April 1958 and canonized by Pope Paul VI on 27 January 1974. Her feast is kept on 26 August. She is invoked as a patron of elderly people and of the abandoned aged. Her remains are venerated at the motherhouse of her congregation in Valencia.
