Biography

Short Description

Stanisław Kubista was born on 27 September 1898 in Kostuchna, a village in Upper Silesia that then belonged to the German Empire and is now a district of Katowice in Poland. He was a Polish Silesian from a devout Catholic family and is recorded as one of six children of Stanisław Kubista and Franciszka, née Watoła. After elementary schooling he was conscripted into the German army during the First World War and served on the Western Front. The war’s end, together with a missionary vocation already formed in youth, led him to seek admission to the Society of the Divine Word (Societas Verbi Divini), the congregation of Divine Word Missionaries founded by Arnold Janssen.

He entered the Society in the years immediately after the war and completed novitiate and studies in philosophy and theology, including formation at the SVD house of St. Gabriel in Mödling, near Vienna. He was ordained to the priesthood on 26 May 1927. Assigned to the Polish province of the congregation, he was sent to the large missionary house at Górna Grupa in northern Poland. There he worked as preacher, confessor, and teacher, and he became especially known as an editor and popular religious writer. He contributed to missionary periodicals aimed at Polish readers, among them Mały Misjonarz (Little Missionary), and helped promote awareness of the foreign missions in interwar Poland. Contemporaries described him as an energetic organizer of simple and steadfast faith rather than as a public figure of wide fame.

After the German invasion of Poland in September 1939, the SVD community at Górna Grupa came under Nazi occupation. In the autumn of 1939 the Gestapo arrested Kubista together with other Divine Word missionaries from the house. He was moved through successive prisons and camps, including Stutthof, and in the spring of 1940 was transferred to the Sachsenhausen concentration camp near Oranienburg. Forced labor and abuse broke his health. Survivor accounts from the Society’s martyrology state that, when he was too weak to work, a camp overseer attacked him and inflicted fatal chest injuries. He died in the camp on 26 April 1940. No verified burial place is known; like many who died at Sachsenhausen, he left no identified grave.

Pope John Paul II beatified Stanisław Kubista in Warsaw on 13 June 1999, together with a large group of Polish clergy and laity killed under German occupation, known as the 108 Martyrs of World War II. That group is commemorated liturgically on 12 June. Kubista is venerated as a blessed of the Catholic Church and as a martyr of the Society of the Divine Word. He has not been canonized. His memory is preserved chiefly in SVD and Polish Catholic sources as that of a missionary priest whose relatively hidden editorial and pastoral work ended in martyrdom during the Second World War.
