Biography
Stanisław Trojanowski was born in 1908 in the village of Sadłowo near Rypin, in Polish lands then under the Russian Empire. He came from a rural Catholic family of modest means. After the death of his father he worked to help support the household. In early adulthood he sought religious life and, in 1930, entered the Order of Friars Minor Conventual, receiving the name Tymoteusz (Timothy). He was a lay brother, not a priest, and made his profession in the conventual Franciscan community, formed in its tradition of poverty, fraternity, and devotion to the Immaculate Virgin Mary.
He was assigned to Niepokalanów, the large Franciscan house known as the City of the Immaculate, founded by Saint Maximilian Kolbe. There he shared in the community’s apostolate, which included a major Catholic publishing work that produced the magazine Rycerz Niepokalanej (Knight of the Immaculate) and other religious literature. Brother Tymoteusz served in practical roles that sustained the monastery and its press, living the ordinary labor of a Franciscan brother in the years before the Second World War.
After the German invasion of Poland in 1939, Niepokalanów came under occupation. In October 1941 the Gestapo arrested a number of the friars, including Brother Tymoteusz. He was held in Warsaw and then deported to the Auschwitz concentration camp. Under the camp’s regime of forced labor, hunger, and brutality he died in February 1942. Martyrological records present his death as part of the persecution of the Church and of religious in occupied Poland.
Pope John Paul II beatified him on 13 June 1999 in Warsaw, together with 107 other Polish victims of the Nazi occupation, known collectively as the 108 Martyrs of World War II. Their liturgical commemoration is kept on 12 June. Brother Tymoteusz Trojanowski is remembered as a Conventual Franciscan lay brother whose quiet fidelity and martyrdom belong to the twentieth-century witness of the Polish Church.
