Biography

Short Description

Stanislaus of Szczepanów, known in Polish as Stanisław ze Szczepanowa, was born in or about 1030 in the village of Szczepanów in Lesser Poland, then part of the Kingdom of Poland. Later medieval hagiography, especially the thirteenth-century life written by the Dominican Wincenty of Kielce, describes him as the long-awaited son of noble and devout parents, traditionally called Wielisław and Bogna. He is said to have been educated at the cathedral school of Gniezno, at that time the chief ecclesiastical centre of Poland, and later tradition adds a period of study abroad, perhaps at Liège or Paris, though this cannot be confirmed from contemporary records. After his return he was ordained priest by Bishop Lambert Suła of Kraków and served as a preacher and as a member of the cathedral chapter.

In 1072, following Lambert's death, Stanislaus was chosen Bishop of Kraków with the consent of Duke Bolesław II, later styled the Generous or the Bold, and with papal confirmation. As bishop he is remembered in the later sources for pastoral energy, concern for the poor, and efforts to strengthen clerical discipline in a Polish church still recovering from the pagan reaction of the 1030s. He is associated with the foundation or endowment of churches in his diocese. Almost nothing about his day-to-day episcopate can be verified from documents of his own lifetime. The earliest narrative notice is the brief allusion in the early twelfth-century chronicle of Gallus Anonymus, which speaks of a fatal quarrel between king and bishop; the much fuller story told by Wincenty Kadłubek in the early thirteenth century, and by subsequent vitae, recasts the episode as a struggle between a tyrannical ruler and a bishop who defended the rights of the Church and of the oppressed.

The quarrel with Bolesław II remains historically obscure in its immediate causes. Hagiographical tradition holds that Stanislaus rebuked the king for cruelty to his subjects, for the violation of noblewomen, and for the costs of incessant campaigning. A well-known legend, elaborated after Kadłubek, relates that the bishop had bought an estate at Piotrawin from a man named Piotr; when Piotr's heirs later denied the sale, Stanislaus raised the dead man from the grave so that he could testify that the price had been paid. Modern historians more often interpret the conflict as political: the bishop may have sided with magnates opposed to Bolesław's autocratic methods and to his Hungarian and Ruthenian wars. According to the received account, Stanislaus at last excommunicated the king. Bolesław ordered his knights to kill the bishop; when they would not, the king himself slew Stanislaus on 11 April 1079, while the bishop was celebrating Mass in the Church of Saint Michael on the rocky outcrop of Skałka in Kraków. Legend adds that the corpse was hacked to pieces and thrown into a pool, then miraculously reunited, a theme that became central to his iconography.

The assassination provoked a political collapse. Bolesław II lost his throne, fled to Hungary, and died in exile; his brother Władysław I Herman succeeded him. Stanislaus was first buried at Skałka. Tradition places the translation of his relics to Wawel Cathedral in 1088. His cult developed through the twelfth and thirteenth centuries as a symbol both of ecclesiastical liberty and of Polish national identity. Pope Innocent IV canonized him at Assisi on 17 September 1253, making him one of the first saints of native Polish origin. He became a principal patron of Poland and of the city and diocese of Kraków. In the General Roman Calendar his feast is kept on 11 April, the day of his martyrdom; in Poland it is also observed on 8 May, commemorating the translation of the relics. The sanctuary at Skałka and the silver sarcophagus in Wawel Cathedral have remained major places of pilgrimage. While historians continue to separate the sparse eleventh- and twelfth-century notices from the richly developed medieval legend, the violent death of the Bishop of Kraków at the king's hands in 1079, and the durable cult that followed, are firmly established.
