Biography

Short Description

Stefan Dragutin was a medieval Serbian king of the Nemanjić dynasty, the eldest son of King Stefan Uroš I and Queen Helen of Anjou. He was born in the Serbian kingdom in the mid-thirteenth century; surviving sources do not record an exact year of birth. In the later 1260s he was married to Catherine (Katalin), daughter of King Stephen V of Hungary, a dynastic settlement that followed warfare between Serbia and Hungary and thereafter tied him to the Árpád court. The marriage produced children, among them Stefan Vladislav, who later ruled in Syrmia, and Elizabeth (Jelena), who married Stephen I Kotromanić, Ban of Bosnia. A further son, Urošic, is reported in later tradition to have entered the monastic life.

In 1276 Dragutin rose against his father and, with Hungarian support, forced Uroš I from the throne, becoming king of Serbia. His reign over the main Serbian kingdom lasted until 1282. In that year, after a hunting accident in which he broke his leg, he abdicated in favour of his younger brother Stefan Uroš II Milutin at an assembly associated with Deževo. Near-contemporary narratives treat the injury as a decisive turning point, sometimes giving it a religious interpretation as a sign that he should leave the throne. Uroš I had already withdrawn into monastic life after his deposition; Dragutin’s own later profession as a monk belongs to the same Nemanjić pattern of royal abdication and tonsure.

After 1282 Dragutin retained a large northern appanage and, through his Hungarian kinship, obtained further lands including Mačva and parts of Syrmia (Srem), together with Belgrade, becoming the first Serbian ruler to hold that city. From then until his death he governed this northern realm with the title of king of Syrmia, while Milutin ruled the principal Serbian lands from the south. In his own territories Dragutin acted as a church founder and patron. The Church of Saint Achillius at Arilje, associated with him and decorated in the late thirteenth century, preserves royal portraits and a painted Nemanjić genealogy that are among the most important visual records of the dynasty.

His later years were shaped by uneasy relations with Milutin and by the Hungarian frontier world in which he lived. He sought at times to secure the Serbian succession for his son Vladislav, which led to open conflict with his brother in the early fourteenth century; the dispute was eventually settled through the mediation of the Serbian Church. Because of his Hungarian marriage and the Catholic presence in the borderlands he ruled, he maintained contacts with the papacy, and Western observers sometimes hoped for a change of ecclesiastical allegiance. He remained, however, within the Serbian Orthodox tradition.

Toward the end of his life Dragutin took monastic vows under the name Teoktist. He died in 1316 and was buried at the monastery of Đurđevi Stupovi. He is venerated as a saint in the Serbian Orthodox Church. His son Vladislav continued for a short time in the northern lands before they passed under Milutin’s control. Dragutin’s career illustrates the divided inheritance, Hungarian entanglement, and royal monastic piety that marked Serbian politics in the later thirteenth and early fourteenth centuries.
