Biography

Short Description

Stefan Uroš II Milutin was a medieval Serbian king of the Nemanjić dynasty who reigned from 1282 until 1321. He was the younger son of King Stefan Uroš I and Queen Helen of Anjou. In 1282 his elder brother, King Stefan Dragutin, abdicated at a council held at Deževo, reportedly after a riding injury, and Milutin took the throne under an arrangement that Dragutin and his descendants would retain certain lands and succession claims. Milutin did not fully honor that understanding, which produced a long rivalry with Dragutin and, later, with Dragutin’s son Vladislav. Over nearly four decades he made Serbia a major Balkan power, shifting the political center of the kingdom southward and using Skopje as an important royal seat.

His reign was marked by almost continuous warfare and expansion. In the 1280s and 1290s he campaigned against the Byzantine Empire, taking much of northern Macedonia, including Skopje, and pressing into Albanian and Epirote districts. He also fought on his northern and western borders and involved himself in Hungarian, Bosnian, and Bulgarian affairs. A prolonged conflict with Dragutin in the early fourteenth century divided the Serbian lands until a reconciliation was arranged. In 1299 peace with Byzantium was sealed by his marriage to Simonida (Simonis), daughter of Emperor Andronikos II Palaiologos. The alliance brought him imperial recognition and Byzantine court ceremonial, and it oriented Serbian elite culture more strongly toward Constantinople.

Milutin married several times for political ends. Earlier unions included Helena Doukaina, daughter of John I Doukas of Thessaly; a brief marriage to Elizabeth of Hungary; and Anna, daughter of the Bulgarian tsar George I Terter, whom he set aside in order to marry Simonida. The marriage to Simonida, who was a child at the wedding, was controversial in his own time and remains so in historical memory. He had several children, among them Stefan Uroš III Dečanski, who eventually succeeded him; Stefan Konstantin; and a daughter, Anna Neda, who married the Bulgarian ruler Michael Shishman. Late in the reign he quarreled with Dečanski, who was accused of conspiracy, blinded according to a Byzantine political custom, and sent to Constantinople. Dečanski later returned and claimed the throne after his father’s death.

As a ktetor, or church founder, Milutin was among the most prolific builders of the Serbian Middle Ages. He founded or substantially rebuilt many churches and monasteries, including Gračanica, Banjska Monastery (intended as his mausoleum), the Church of Our Lady of Ljeviš in Prizren, the King’s Church at Studenica, and major works at Hilandar on Mount Athos, together with endowments in Jerusalem, Constantinople, and Thessalonica. These foundations, decorated in the court style of fresco painting associated with his reign, are central monuments of late Byzantine and Serbian medieval art. He issued charters, supported the Serbian Church, and used architecture and liturgy to present himself as a sacred king in the Orthodox tradition.

Milutin died on 29 October 1321 at his court of Nerodimlje. He was buried in the Church of Saint Stephen at Banjska Monastery. A succession struggle followed among Dečanski, Konstantin, and Vladislav; Dečanski emerged as king. The Serbian Orthodox Church canonized Milutin as a saint-king. His relics were later moved from Banjska, and from the fifteenth century they have been kept in Sofia, where he is venerated as the Holy King. His feast is observed on 30 October. Historians regard his reign as a high point of medieval Serbian state power, while also noting the dynastic violence, the political use of marriage, and the unsettled succession that followed his death.
