Biography

Short Description

Stefan Uroš III, known to history as Stefan Dečanski after the great monastery he founded at Dečani, was King of Serbia from 1322 until 1331 and a member of the Nemanjić dynasty. He was a son of King Stefan Uroš II Milutin, under whom Serbia had already become a leading Balkan power. The exact year of his birth and the identity of his mother are not firmly established in the surviving sources; later tradition and modern reference works often place his birth in the later thirteenth century, but no contemporary record fixes the date. In his youth he was associated with the government of Zeta, a maritime region of the Serbian realm. In 1314 he rebelled against his father. The rising failed, and Stefan was captured. Following a Byzantine-influenced practice meant to exclude a prince from the succession, he was blinded and sent into exile at the Byzantine court in Constantinople, where he remained for some seven years, largely at the Monastery of Christ Pantokrator. Later Serbian hagiography, above all the Life written in the early fifteenth century by Gregory Tsamblak, attributes the restoration of his sight to a miracle of Saint Nicholas. Historians generally treat the blinding as incomplete or as having left him with partial vision, which would explain his subsequent capacity to rule.

After King Milutin fell ill, Stefan was allowed to return to Serbia around 1320. Milutin died in October 1321, and a contest for the throne followed among Stefan, his half-brother Konstantin, and his cousin Stefan Vladislav II, son of the former king Stefan Dragutin. Stefan Uroš III prevailed and was crowned king in January 1322 by Archbishop Nikodim I, taking the dynastic royal name Stefan Uroš III. He had earlier married Theodora, a daughter of the Bulgarian ruler Smilets; that marriage produced his heir Stefan Dušan and at least one daughter. After his accession he married Maria Palaiologina, a Byzantine noblewoman of the Palaiologos family, by whom he had further children, including Simeon Uroš. His reign continued the territorial and ecclesiastical consolidation begun by his father and was marked by close, if sometimes strained, relations with both the Byzantine Empire and Bulgaria.

The principal pious foundation of the reign is the monastery of Visoki Dečani in Metohija, begun in the later 1320s with the participation of craftsmen that included the builder Fra Vita of Kotor. The church, dedicated to Christ Pantokrator, is among the largest and most fully painted medieval churches in the Serbian lands; it later became Stefan’s burial place and the centre of his cult. In foreign affairs the decisive event of the reign was the Battle of Velbazhd on 28 July 1330. Bulgarian emperor Michael III Shishman, in alliance with the Byzantines, invaded Serbian territory. Stefan’s army, in which his son Dušan played a prominent command role, won a complete victory, and Michael Shishman was mortally wounded. The outcome confirmed Serbian military predominance in the central Balkans and opened the way for the later expansion associated with Dušan, although Stefan himself did not immediately annex large Bulgarian territories and arranged a settlement that included a more compliant regime in Bulgaria.

Relations between the king and his eldest son broke down in 1331. Contemporary and near-contemporary accounts indicate that a party of younger nobles rallied to Dušan, who had gained prestige as a commander. In the summer of 1331 Dušan’s forces seized the king. Stefan Uroš III was imprisoned in the fortress of Zvečan, where he died on 11 November 1331. Later tradition, accepted by the church and by most historians, holds that he was murdered, commonly said to have been strangled, with the knowledge or on the orders of his son. He was buried at Dečani. Within a relatively short time he came to be venerated as a saint and martyr in the Serbian Orthodox Church under the name Saint Stefan of Dečani. His feast is observed on 11 November according to the Julian calendar (24 November in the Gregorian calendar). The principal medieval account of his life and miracles is the hagiography composed by Gregory Tsamblak, abbot of Dečani, around 1402. Visoki Dečani, which houses his relics, remains a major monastic and pilgrimage site and is inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List.
