Biography

Short Description

Stefan Uroš V, remembered in later Serbian tradition as Uroš the Weak, was the second and last emperor of the medieval Serbian Empire and the final sovereign of the Nemanjić dynasty. He was the only son of Emperor Stefan Dušan (Stefan Uroš IV) and Empress Helena (Jelena), a Bulgarian princess and sister of Tsar Ivan Alexander. Born in the 1330s in the Serbian kingdom, he was associated with royal and then imperial rank while still a child: he was crowned king during his father's lifetime and was made co-emperor when Dušan assumed the imperial title at Skopje in 1346. Contemporary sources give no securely attested birthplace. When Dušan died suddenly in December 1355, Uroš succeeded to a realm that, on paper, stretched from the Danube southward through Macedonia, Albania, Epirus, and Thessaly. He inherited neither his father's military prestige nor a comparable hold over the great nobles who had been rewarded with lands and titles during the years of conquest.

The two decades of his reign saw the rapid unravelling of central authority. Regional magnates acted with growing independence: the Mrnjavčević brothers in Macedonia, the Balšići in Zeta, the houses of Branković and Dejanović, and Lazar Hrebeljanović in the Morava valley. Uroš's uncle Simeon Uroš (Siniša) established a rival imperial court in Thessaly and Epirus. By the mid-1360s Uroš was compelled to recognize Vukašin Mrnjavčević as king and co-ruler, an arrangement that transferred effective power to the Mrnjavčević family while leaving Uroš with the imperial title. Byzantine, Ragusan, and later Serbian narratives consistently describe him as pious, mild, and politically ineffectual, the origin of the epithet by which he is still known.

In a diplomatic marriage of the early 1360s he wed Anna (Anca), daughter of the Wallachian voivode Nicolae Alexandru. The marriage produced no children, and Uroš died without a direct heir. The military disaster at the Battle of the Maritsa (Chernomen) on 26 September 1371, in which King Vukašin and Despot Jovan Uglješa were killed by Ottoman forces, stripped the remaining imperial structure of its strongest armed support. Uroš himself died a few months later, in December 1371, at a location that the surviving sources do not securely identify. His death extinguished the Nemanjić line that had ruled Serbia since the late twelfth century and opened a generation of competing regional lordships that lasted until the Ottoman conquest of the Serbian lands in the following century.

The Serbian Orthodox Church later numbered him among its saints, commemorating a ruler whose meekness and personal piety are emphasized in hagiographical tradition rather than any political success. The precise circumstances of his death and his original place of burial are not firmly established; later relic translations associated him with monasteries in the Serbian lands, including traditions connected with Fruška Gora. He remains a figure of the mid-fourteenth-century Balkans whose reign marks the collapse of the short-lived Serbian Empire created by his father.
