Biography

Short Description

Stefano da Cuneo, known in English as Stephen of Cuneo, was a Catholic priest and friar of the Order of Friars Minor who died as a martyr in Jerusalem in 1391. He was born in Cuneo, in Piedmont in northwestern Italy; the year of his birth is not recorded in surviving sources. Beyond his place of origin and his membership in the Franciscan order, almost nothing is known of his family, education, or the circumstances of his religious profession. He belongs to the relatively large number of late medieval Franciscans whose lives are documented chiefly through the events of their deaths.

By the later fourteenth century he was living in the Holy Land as a member of the Franciscan Custody of the Holy Land, which since the thirteenth century had been charged with the care of the Christian holy places under Muslim rule. There he was associated with three other Franciscan priests: Nicholas Tavelic, a native of Šibenik in Dalmatia; Deodatus of Rodez (also called Deodatus of Aquitaine); and Peter of Narbonne. Under the Mamluk administration of Jerusalem, Christians were tolerated as a subject community but were forbidden to preach publicly to Muslims. After a period of conventional ministry, the four friars decided to make an open profession of the Christian faith before the Islamic authorities.

On 11 November 1391 they appeared before the qadi of Jerusalem, proclaimed the Gospel, and called on their hearers to accept Christianity. They were arrested at once and held in prison. Having refused to withdraw their words, they were sentenced to death and executed by beheading in Jerusalem on 14 November 1391. Franciscan chronicles treat the episode as a voluntary act of missionary witness. Independent archival detail about Stefano's personal role, as distinct from that of the group, has not survived.

Veneration of the four martyrs grew within the Franciscan order and in the regions from which they came, especially in Croatia in connection with Nicholas Tavelic. Pope Leo XIII beatified them in 1889. Pope Paul VI canonized them together on 21 June 1970; they are regarded as the first canonized saints of the Franciscan Custody of the Holy Land. Their liturgical feast is observed on 14 November. Stefano da Cuneo is commemorated as one of this group of four; no separate cult, patronage, or extensive independent biography attached to him alone is securely documented.
