Biography

Blessed Stephen Bellesini (Stefano Bellesini) was an Augustinian friar and priest whose life unfolded across the revolutionary and Napoleonic upheavals of northern Italy and the Tyrol and, later, in the Papal States. He was born on 25 November 1774 in Trento (Trent), then the seat of the Prince-Bishopric of Trent within the Holy Roman Empire. In youth he entered the Order of Saint Augustine and took the religious name Stephen. He completed the order’s course of studies and was ordained to the priesthood in the late 1790s. French occupation and the Napoleonic suppression of religious houses dispersed many Augustinian communities. Forced out of regular conventual life, Bellesini continued to exercise the priesthood and turned especially to the education of children. He taught in local schools and later held a supervisory role in the schools of his native region. Later devotion remembered this period for his patience with the young, his insistence on catechesis, and his care for the poor.

When the post-Napoleonic restoration allowed religious communities to revive, he returned to the Augustinians. In 1826 he was assigned to Genazzano, southeast of Rome, to the shrine of Our Mother of Good Counsel (Santa Maria del Buon Consiglio), a pilgrimage church long served by the order. There he became prior of the convent and parish priest. He promoted schooling for the children of the town, visited the sick in their homes, and combined the reception of pilgrims with ordinary parish ministry. Accounts of his years at Genazzano stress personal austerity together with kindness toward penitents and those in want.

During an epidemic of contagious disease in Genazzano he continued to bring the sacraments to the dying. He contracted the illness himself and died at Genazzano on 2 February 1840. He was buried at the shrine he had served. A local cult developed, and after the canonical process he was beatified by Pope Pius X on 27 December 1904. He has not been canonized. The Order of Saint Augustine keeps his liturgical memorial on 3 February. His remains are venerated at the shrine of Our Mother of Good Counsel in Genazzano.
