Biography

Short Description

Stephen III of Moldavia, known to later generations as Stephen the Great (Ștefan cel Mare), ruled the Principality of Moldavia from 1457 to 1504. He was the son of Bogdan II, a prince of Moldavia who was assassinated in 1451 by the rival Petru Aron, and of Oltea, a woman of uncertain origin. After his father's death Stephen lived in exile, spending time in Transylvania and at the Wallachian court of Vlad III. In 1457 he returned with Wallachian support, defeated Petru Aron, and was anointed prince, inaugurating a reign of nearly half a century that became legendary in Eastern European memory.

Stephen's rule unfolded in the shadow of Ottoman expansion after the fall of Constantinople. He fought the Ottomans repeatedly, winning a celebrated victory at Vaslui in January 1475 over the army of Hadım Suleiman Pasha, a success that led Pope Sixtus IV to hail him as Athleta Christi. In 1476 Sultan Mehmed II invaded Moldavia and defeated Stephen at Valea Albă, yet the prince regrouped, harassed the invaders, and preserved the autonomy of his state, sometimes by paying tribute and sometimes by arms. He also campaigned against Hungary, Poland, the Crimean Tatars, and neighboring Wallachia. In 1497 he defeated a Polish invasion under King John I Albert in the Cosmin Forest. These wars were accompanied by a sophisticated diplomacy that sought alliances with Hungary, Poland, Venice, and Muscovy.

A defining feature of his reign was ecclesiastical patronage. Tradition holds that he founded a church or monastery after each victory; whatever the exact count, he established or rebuilt dozens of Orthodox foundations, including Putna, Neamț, Voroneț, and many village churches. Putna Monastery, begun in the 1460s, became the dynastic necropolis. The painted monasteries of northern Moldavia, with their exterior fresco cycles, remain among the most important monuments of late medieval Orthodox art. Stephen married three times: Evdochia of Kiev, who died in the 1460s; Maria of Mangup, a princess from the Crimean principality of Theodoro with Palaiologan connections; and Maria Voichița, daughter of Radu III of Wallachia. Among his children were Elena, who married Ivan Ivanovich, son of Ivan III of Moscow, and Bogdan, who succeeded him as Bogdan III.

Stephen died on 2 July 1504 and was buried at Putna Monastery, where his tomb became a focus of princely and later national commemoration. Sixteenth-century Moldavian chronicles already portrayed him as an ideal Christian warrior-prince. In 1992 the Holy Synod of the Romanian Orthodox Church canonized him as Saint Stephen the Great, appointing 2 July as his feast day. He is venerated as a defender of the Orthodox faith and is widely regarded as a national saint and historical symbol in Romania and in the Republic of Moldova.
