Biography

Short Description

Stephen Min Kuk-ka (Korean: 민극가 스테파노; also romanized Min Kŭk-ka or Min Geuk-ga) was a Korean Catholic lay catechist and martyr of the Joseon period. He was born in 1787 in Korea. Surviving notices of his life are brief, as is typical for many of the lay Korean martyrs of the nineteenth century. He is identified in the martyrological lists as a member of the Min clan and as a married layman who served the illegal Catholic community as a catechist. Korean Catholicism in his generation was still a young and almost entirely indigenous church. It had taken root in the late eighteenth century through Korean scholars who encountered Catholic books and teaching in Beijing, and for years it had little or no resident clergy. By Min’s adulthood the faith remained forbidden under Joseon law, which treated it as a heterodox teaching that rejected Confucian ancestral rites and thereby threatened the ritual and political order of the state.

As a catechist, Min instructed others in Catholic doctrine when such teaching was a capital offense. In the Korean church of that era, catechists and lay leaders often held communities together between rare visits by Chinese or French missionary priests, and they were among the first to be sought out when officials launched a new campaign against Christians. Standard accounts record that he was married; the name of his spouse is not preserved in the usual Western and Korean martyrologies, and it is not clearly documented whether he had children. His public role as a teacher of the faith, rather than any high ecclesiastical office, is what placed him in danger.

The Kihae (Gihae) persecution, which began in 1839, was one of the most severe anti-Catholic campaigns of nineteenth-century Korea. It was driven by royal edicts, Confucian officials, and court factions that ordered the arrest of believers, the destruction of Christian books, and the use of torture to obtain apostasy. Stephen Min Kuk-ka was arrested in the course of this persecution. He was interrogated and tortured. The summary hagiographical notices that survive for individual lay martyrs state that he refused to recant. He was executed by beheading in Seoul on 20 January 1840, at about fifty-three years of age.

Min Kuk-ka was among the Korean martyrs beatified by Pope Pius XI on 5 July 1925. He was canonized by Pope John Paul II on 6 May 1984 in Seoul, together with Andrew Kim Taegon, Paul Chong Hasang, and one hundred companions, the group known as the 103 Korean Martyrs. Their collective liturgical feast is kept on 20 September in the General Roman Calendar. Individual biographical detail for many of these lay martyrs remains limited; the attested core of Min Kuk-ka’s life is his birth in 1787, his work as a married catechist, his execution in Seoul in January 1840, and his subsequent beatification and canonization with the other Korean martyrs.
