Biography

Short Description

Stephen Pongrácz (Hungarian: Pongrácz István) was a Hungarian Jesuit priest and martyr, born in 1582 at Alvinc in the Principality of Transylvania (today Vințu de Jos, Romania). He belonged to a noble Hungarian family and was educated as a Catholic in a region then marked by sharp confessional division among Catholics, Calvinists, Lutherans, and Unitarians. He studied at the Jesuit college in Kolozsvár (now Cluj-Napoca). In the early seventeenth century he entered the Society of Jesus and completed his novitiate and studies of philosophy and theology in houses of the Austrian Jesuit province, including at Graz. After ordination he worked as a preacher and missionary among Hungarian-speaking Catholics.

In 1619 he was sent, together with the Polish Jesuit Melchior Grodziecki, to the Jesuit residence in Košice (then Kassa), a royal free city in Upper Hungary with a largely Protestant population and only a small Catholic community. They were joined in pastoral work by Marko Krizin, a Croatian priest and canon of Esztergom charged with administering Catholic property in the city. Their ministry unfolded at the outset of the Thirty Years' War, during the anti-Habsburg campaign of Gábor Bethlen, the Calvinist prince of Transylvania, whose forces occupied Košice in September 1619.

After the fall of the city, Calvinist Hajduk soldiers arrested the three Catholic priests. Over subsequent days the captives were starved, beaten, and tortured in an effort to make them abandon the Catholic faith and accept Calvinism. They refused. On 7 September 1619 they were put to death. Contemporary and later martyrological accounts describe especially cruel treatment of Pongrácz, who was beaten, burned with torches, and left in a drain or cesspit, where he died of his wounds. The bodies of the three men were discarded without honorable burial.

Catholics later recovered the remains, which became objects of local veneration and were in time placed in the Cathedral of St. Elizabeth in Košice. The cause of the Košice martyrs proceeded slowly. Pope Pius X beatified Stephen Pongrácz, Melchior Grodziecki, and Marko Krizin on 15 January 1905. Pope John Paul II canonized them on 2 July 1995 in Košice, during an apostolic visit to Slovakia. Their feast is kept on 7 September. Pongrácz is honored especially in Hungary, Slovakia, and within the Society of Jesus as one of the martyrs of Košice.
