Biography

Short Description

Saint Stylianos of Paphlagonia, also known as Stylianos the Hermit, was an Eastern Christian monk and wonderworker of late antiquity. Traditional hagiography places his birth in the city of Adrianopolis in the province of Paphlagonia, in Asia Minor, within the Eastern Roman Empire, during the fifth century. His parents were prosperous Christians. Upon their death he inherited considerable property, which he distributed to the poor rather than retain for himself. He then entered a monastery in his native region and took up a life of prayer, fasting, and monastic discipline.

In the monastery Stylianos became noted for ascetic practices more severe than those of his fellow monks. Desiring greater solitude, he left the cenobium and settled as a hermit in a cave in the wilderness. Later accounts state that the cave was at times filled with divine light and that he received heavenly visitations. From this hermitage he became famous for miraculous healings, especially of children. Parents brought sick infants and young children to him, and many were said to have been restored to health. Orthodox iconography therefore customarily represents him as an elderly monk holding a child in swaddling bands.

The year of his death is not recorded in sources that can be independently verified. He is described as having died peacefully after a long ascetic life, and his relics were believed to continue to work miracles. The Eastern Orthodox Church commemorates him on 26 November. He held no patriarchal or papal office. The surviving tradition presents him as a lifelong monk and hermit; there is no evidence that he married or had children.

Veneration of Stylianos developed in the Byzantine and later Greek Orthodox world. He is invoked as a protector of children and infants, and in popular devotion also by those who hope for offspring. The personal names Stylianos and Stelios remain common in Greece in his honor. Like many saints of the early Byzantine period, he was not the subject of a formal canonization process of the later Western type; his cult rests on liturgical commemoration and popular piety. Exact dates of birth and death, the place of burial, and many other biographical particulars are unknown.
