Biography

Short Description

Suitbert of Kaiserswerth (also called Suidbert, Swidbert, or Suitbertus) was an Anglo-Saxon missionary and bishop active in Frisia and on the lower Rhine in the late seventh and early eighth centuries. He was born in England sometime in the seventh century; no contemporary source records the year or the town of his birth. He belonged to the generation of English churchmen who, following the example of Wilfrid, Egbert, and Willibrord, devoted themselves to missions among the still largely pagan peoples of the North Sea coast and the Rhine frontier. He is counted among the companions of Saint Willibrord, whose party left for Frisia around 690 after a period of preparation associated with the Irish monastery of Rath Melsigi and with the support of the Frankish mayor Pepin of Herstal.

The principal early witness to Suitbert's career is Bede's Ecclesiastical History of the English People, completed in the 730s. Bede relates that while Willibrord was in Rome, the missionaries in Frisia chose Suitbert to be made a bishop. Suitbert therefore travelled to Britain and received consecration from Saint Wilfrid, then in exile in Mercia, an event usually dated to the early 690s. After his return to the Continent he preached among the Frisians and subsequently among the Bructeri (Boructuarii) east of the Rhine. That eastern mission collapsed under attack from pagan Saxons, and Suitbert was obliged to abandon it.

Pepin of Herstal then granted him an island in the Rhine called Werth. There Suitbert established a monastery, which he ruled as abbot-bishop for the remainder of his life. The house followed the monastic customs of the Anglo-Saxon Benedictine missions. The island community became known in connection with his name (Suitbertswerth) and later as Kaiserswerth. From this base he continued pastoral work in the neighbouring Frankish lands along the Rhine until his death.

Suitbert died at Kaiserswerth on 1 March 713 and was buried in his monastery. Veneration of him as a saint grew from the local cult at the abbey and was established well before the later medieval procedures of papal canonization. His relics have remained associated with Kaiserswerth; a well-known reliquary shrine, dating in its principal form from the thirteenth century, is connected with the church of Saint Suitbertus in the present-day Düsseldorf district of Kaiserswerth. The Roman Martyrology lists him on 1 March, describing him as a bishop who preached the Gospel to the Frisians and other Germanic peoples in the time of Pope Sergius. Beyond Bede's short account and the evidence of his cult, many details of his life are unrecorded, and later medieval lives must be used with caution.
