Biography

Short Description

Saint Sunniva (Old Norse: Sunnifa), also called Sunniva of Selja, is a legendary Irish virgin venerated as a martyr and as the principal patron saint of Western Norway. According to the medieval Selja legend, which survives in Latin and later vernacular forms from about the twelfth century, she was the daughter of a Christian king in Ireland. When a pagan king demanded her in marriage, she refused in order to keep her faith and her virginity. With a band of companions—sometimes said to have included a brother named Alban—she boarded ships stripped of oars and steering gear and entrusted the voyage to God.

The party drifted to the west coast of Norway and landed on the island of Selja, in the region of Nordfjord, during the late tenth century, while the powerful Earl Hákon Sigurdsson of Lade still ruled as a pagan. Sunniva and her followers settled as hermits, living in a cave. Hákon, hearing of foreign Christians on the island, came with armed men to seize them. The refugees retreated into the cave and prayed not to be captured; the rock collapsed, burying them. They died there and were thereafter honored as the saints of Selja (the Seljumenn). The tale follows a widespread Insular pattern of the royal virgin, the rudderless boat, and death in a cave, and it cannot be corroborated as a historical biography.

After Hákon’s death and the rise of the Christian king Olaf Tryggvason from 995, lights, washed-up bones, and a sweet odor were reported on Selja. Olaf is said to have found Sunniva’s body intact and the bones of her companions and to have founded a church on the island. Selja became one of medieval Norway’s chief pilgrimage sites. A Benedictine monastery, Selje Abbey, was established there in the late eleventh or early twelfth century. In 1170 Sunniva’s relics were translated to Christ Church Cathedral in Bergen, and she was taken as patron of the city and of the Bergen diocese. The joint feast of Sunniva and the Selja saints, Seljumannamesse, is observed on 8 July.

No independent tenth-century source confirms Sunniva as a historical person, and scholars generally regard her vita as hagiography that may have been composed to explain an early Christian shrine or relic cult on Selja. Excavations have revealed a cave church and substantial monastic ruins, which attest the importance of the site even if they do not prove the legend. The Reformation ended the abbey and the public cult; the relics disappeared. Interest revived in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries with regional identity, historical research, and the return of a Catholic minority. Sunniva remains the traditional patron of Vestlandet and of Bergen, and her memory is kept in local observance on 8 July, in church dedications, and in the ruined sanctuary on Selja itself.
