Biography

Short Description

Susanna U Sur-im was a nineteenth-century Korean Catholic laywoman who died as a martyr during the Joseon dynasty's persecution of Christians. Born in 1803 in Korea, she lived at a time when the Catholic faith, introduced to the peninsula in 1784 through lay scholars and subsequent household communities, remained illegal. The Joseon state regarded Catholicism as subversive of Confucian social order, above all because Catholics refused the ancestral rites that the government treated as civic duty. She belonged to the generation of believers who practiced in secret, often within family networks, and who for long periods had little or no access to ordained clergy until members of the Paris Foreign Missions Society entered the country in the 1830s.

She is recorded as a married laywoman of the then apostolic vicariate of Korea. In the early Korean Church the faith commonly spread through households, and wives and widows often instructed children, sheltered catechists, and kept the community together under threat of arrest. Surviving documents do not preserve the name of her husband, her precise birthplace, or whether she had children; such silences are typical, because records were dangerous to keep and many were destroyed in successive crackdowns. Like other Catholic women of her time she would have lived with the constant risk of denunciation, imprisonment, and social ruin for refusing state-mandated rituals.

The Gihae persecution began in 1839 after the authorities discovered foreign priests and a growing Catholic community. Bishop Laurent-Joseph-Marius Imbert and Fathers Pierre Maubant and Jacques Chastan gave themselves up in an effort to spare the faithful, but they were executed in September 1839 and a wide campaign of arrests followed. Susanna was among those seized. Prisoners were interrogated, beaten, and tortured to force apostasy, typically by trampling a crucifix or performing prohibited rites. Those who would not recant were condemned. On 20 January 1840 she was beheaded in Seoul, at one of the capital's execution grounds used for Catholics and commonly associated with the area of Seosomun (the Small West Gate).

She was included among the seventy-nine Korean martyrs of the 1839–1846 persecutions beatified by Pope Pius XI on 5 July 1925. On 6 May 1984, during an apostolic visit to Korea, Pope John Paul II canonized her together with Saint Andrew Kim Taegon, Saint Paul Chong Hasang, and one hundred companions, in a ceremony in Seoul. The 103 Korean Martyrs are commemorated jointly on 20 September in the General Roman Calendar. Because of the clandestine conditions of the early Korean Church and the loss of records, many personal particulars of individual martyrs such as Susanna remain sparse; her memory is preserved primarily through the collective witness of the Korean martyrs and the tradition of the Catholic Church in Korea.
