Biography

Short Description

Saint Swithun (also spelled Swithin; Old English Swīþhūn) was a ninth-century bishop of Winchester in the West Saxon kingdom. Almost nothing about his early life can be verified from contemporary records. Later medieval hagiography, written in the tenth and eleventh centuries in connection with the monastic reform at Winchester, presents him as a native of Wessex, educated at the Old Minster, who served as a priest, as chaplain to King Egbert of Wessex, and as tutor to Egbert’s son Æthelwulf. Those biographical details are traditional rather than independently documented. What can be said with more confidence is that Swithun appears as a witness to West Saxon royal charters in the mid-ninth century, which is consistent with a position of trust at court, and that he was consecrated bishop of Winchester in 852 or 853, during the reign of King Æthelwulf.

His episcopate lasted until his death about a decade later. Contemporary evidence for his work as bishop is thin and consists largely of charter attestations; there is no surviving contemporary vita. Later tradition, however, consistently portrays him as humble, charitable, and pastorally active. He is credited with building a bridge at the east gate of Winchester for the convenience of townspeople. A famous miracle story, first recorded in the later lives, tells that he restored a poor woman’s eggs after they were accidentally broken on that bridge. He is also said to have asked to be buried not inside the church, as was usual for bishops, but in a simple outdoor grave in the churchyard of the Old Minster, where rain might fall on him and ordinary people might walk over his resting place—an expression of humility that later writers contrasted with the splendour of the shrine that eventually housed his relics.

Swithun died on 2 July 863 and was buried according to the tradition of his own request. His cult remained relatively modest until 15 July 971, when Bishop Æthelwold of Winchester, as part of the Benedictine reform of the Old Minster, translated the relics from the churchyard into the cathedral. The translation was accompanied by reports of numerous miracles, and Swithun rapidly became the principal saint of Winchester. His shrine drew pilgrims through the rest of the Middle Ages, and dedications and secondary relics spread his name across England. The well-known English weather proverb associated with him—“St Swithun’s day if thou dost rain, for forty days it will remain”—is a later medieval folk belief attached to the 15 July feast of the translation, not a claim made in his own lifetime. In English calendars the principal feast is 15 July; 2 July, the date of his death, is also observed in some uses.

Swithun was never the subject of a formal papal canonization of the later medieval type. His sanctity was recognized through local cult, episcopal promotion under Æthelwold, liturgical observance, and popular devotion, in the manner typical of saints of the pre-Congregation period. He remains the patron saint of Winchester and of Winchester Cathedral, and is popularly invoked in connection with rain and the weather. The historical bishop of the mid-ninth century and the miracle-working patron of later legend are not easy to separate, but the core facts of his episcopate at Winchester and his death in 863 rest on a firmer documentary footing than the colourful stories that grew up around his name.
