Biography

Short Description

Swithun Wells was an English Roman Catholic layman and martyr who suffered in the Elizabethan persecution of Catholics. He was born at Bambridge (now Brambridge) in Hampshire, near Winchester, about 1536, the son of Thomas Wells of Brambridge and Mary, daughter of John Mompesson. He belonged to a recusant family that remained attached to the Catholic faith after the English Reformation. Little is recorded of his schooling, but he became a schoolmaster and for a time taught at Bannister's Court in Southampton before later living in London.

Wells married a woman named Alice; traditional accounts state that they had children. As recusants they refused to attend the services of the established Church of England. By the early 1580s he had come under official notice for recusancy and settled in Gray's Inn Lane in London. There he continued to teach and made his house a place of hospitality for missionary priests, at a time when harbouring a seminary priest was a capital offence under English statute law of 1585.

In November 1591 the priest Edmund Gennings was celebrating Mass in Wells's house when pursuivants associated with Richard Topcliffe raided the dwelling. Gennings and others present were seized. Wells himself was not in the house during the Mass but was arrested shortly afterward and charged with harbouring priests. He was tried and condemned to death. On 10 December 1591 he was hanged in Gray's Inn Fields, opposite his own house, on the same day that Gennings suffered nearby. As a layman he was executed by hanging rather than by the fuller penalty inflicted on the priests.

His wife Alice was also condemned for the same offence but was not put to death. She remained a prisoner and died in Newgate in 1602. Contemporary reports present Wells as meeting execution with composure and as affirming that he died for the Catholic religion and for receiving a priest.

Wells was beatified by Pope Pius XI on 15 December 1929 among a large group of English and Welsh martyrs, and he was canonized by Pope Paul VI on 25 October 1970 as one of the Forty Martyrs of England and Wales. His individual memorial is kept on 10 December, and he is also commemorated with those martyrs. He is honoured as a married lay schoolmaster and recusant host, not as a cleric or member of a religious order.
