Biography

Short Description

Saint Swithun (also spelled Swithin; Old English Swīþhūn) was an Anglo-Saxon bishop of Winchester in the Kingdom of Wessex in the ninth century. Almost nothing about his birth, family, or early career can be verified from contemporary evidence. He enters the surviving record only as a churchman of Wessex who was consecrated bishop of Winchester in 852 or 853, during the reign of King Æthelwulf. He held that see until his death. Later medieval writers, including William of Malmesbury, portrayed him as Æthelwulf’s tutor and a trusted royal counsellor, and some traditions have him accompanying the king on pilgrimage to Rome, but these claims are not corroborated by ninth-century documents. As bishop he appears as a witness to West Saxon royal charters. Later legend also credited him with modest public works at Winchester, notably a stone bridge at the city’s East Gate, and with a reputation for humility and pastoral care, though the details of his administration remain sparse.

Swithun died on 2 July 862 (a minority of authorities prefer 863) and, according to the hagiographical tradition that formed in the following century, he asked to be buried in a plain grave outside the Old Minster rather than within the church, so that rain might fall on his tomb and the feet of passers-by might tread over it. That request, whether historical or constructed after the fact, became central to his later cult. In 971, as part of the Benedictine reform of the English church, Bishop Æthelwold of Winchester had Swithun’s remains translated from the churchyard into the interior of the Old Minster on 15 July. The ceremony was accompanied by a reported flood of miracles. These were written up soon afterwards by the Frankish monk Lantfred of Winchester in his Translatio et miracula S. Swithuni, and they were further publicized in Latin verse by Wulfstan Cantor of Winchester and in Old English prose. The translation, not the obscure ninth-century episcopate, is what made Swithun a major English saint.

The principal English feast is therefore 15 July, the date of the 971 translation, popularly called St Swithun’s Day; 2 July, the day of his death or deposition, was also observed. English weather lore holds that if it rains on 15 July, rain will persist for forty days, a proverb already current in the later Middle Ages and commonly linked to the saint’s wish to lie in the open and to stories of rain during attempts to move his body. When the present Norman cathedral replaced the Old Minster, the relics were transferred into Winchester Cathedral in 1093. A great feretory and later a richly appointed shrine made the church one of the chief pilgrimage destinations of medieval England until the shrine was destroyed at the Reformation. The site of the shrine is still marked in the cathedral.

Swithun was never canonized by a pope according to the later formal process; his cult arose from episcopal translation and popular devotion in the tenth century and was accepted throughout England and, more modestly, on the Continent. He is the patron of Winchester and of Hampshire and is invoked in connection with rain, drought, and the weather. The historical figure remains a poorly documented ninth-century diocesan bishop whose posthumous miracle tradition and weather proverb far outstripped the thin contemporary record of his life.
