Biography

Short Description

Syagrius of Autun was a Gallo-Roman bishop who occupied the see of Autun (the ancient Augustodunum) in Burgundy during the later sixth century, under Merovingian rule. He belonged to the Syagrii, a distinguished senatorial family of late Roman Gaul that had produced high imperial officials in the fifth century, among them the consul Flavius Afranius Syagrius. Nothing reliable is known of the year or place of his birth, nor of his education and early career. He first appears in the historical record already as bishop of Autun, a city that remained an important civic and ecclesiastical centre in the Frankish kingdoms and whose bishop was a suffragan of the metropolitan of Lyon. In that office he stood at the meeting point of the Gallo-Roman aristocracy, the Merovingian courts, and the papacy.

His episcopate is documented chiefly through the letters of Pope Gregory the Great. Syagrius enjoyed the patronage of Queen Brunhilda, the Visigothic-born widow of King Sigebert I of Austrasia, who in the last years of the sixth century exercised power in Austrasia and Burgundy. At Brunhilda's request, Gregory granted Syagrius the pallium in 599, an exceptional honour for a bishop who was not a metropolitan. The pope's surviving correspondence with both the queen and the bishop shows that Rome regarded Syagrius as a principal ally in efforts to reform the Frankish church, especially in the campaign against simony and in the restoration of canonical discipline. Gregory urged that a council be convened in Gaul to address these abuses and looked to Syagrius, among other prelates, to promote it.

The same papal letters connect Syagrius with the English mission. When Gregory dispatched Augustine and his companions to preach to the Anglo-Saxons in 596, he wrote to the bishops of Gaul asking them to receive the missionaries and to assist their journey through Francia; Syagrius was among the addressees. Brunhilda and her grandson Theuderic II were likewise asked to protect and further the mission. Gregory also took an interest in pious foundations at Autun associated with Brunhilda, including a xenodochium (a hospice for pilgrims and the poor) and monastic houses, and he instructed Syagrius to support and oversee such works. In this way the bishop of Autun stood at a junction of Roman missionary policy, royal patronage, and local charity at the close of the sixth century.

Beyond the Gregorian register, contemporary narrative sources for Syagrius are meagre. He did not receive a full vita from a sixth- or seventh-century hagiographer, and later medieval notices are brief. He is traditionally held to have died in 600. The Church has venerated him as a saint, and his feast is kept on 27 August. His cult remained essentially local, tied to the church of Autun, and he is not associated with a widely attested list of patronages. The combination of aristocratic origin, royal favour, papal correspondence, and liturgical commemoration makes him a representative figure of the Gallo-Roman episcopate at the end of antiquity, even though many personal details of his life cannot be recovered from the surviving evidence.
