Biography
Sylvester Gozzolini (Italian: Silvestro Guzzolini) was born in 1177 at Osimo in the March of Ancona, in central Italy. He belonged to a noble family; his father, Gislerio, practiced law. After studies in jurisprudence at Bologna and Padua, Sylvester turned from a legal career to theology and received priestly ordination. He was appointed a canon of the cathedral chapter of Osimo, where he served for a number of years in the early thirteenth century.
Around 1227, scandalized by the worldly and irregular life of the bishop of Osimo, he resigned his canonry and withdrew from the city to live as a hermit. He first settled at Grotta Fucile, a solitary place in the countryside near Osimo, and later moved among other remote sites in the region, attracting disciples by the austerity of his life and his reputation for holiness. In 1231 he established a monastic community at Monte Fano, a wooded height near Fabriano, placing it under the patronage of Saint Benedict and adopting the Benedictine Rule, interpreted with a marked emphasis on poverty, solitude, and strict observance. This house became the mother monastery of a new Benedictine congregation, later known as the Sylvestrines or the Congregation of Montefano.
The congregation received papal recognition in the mid-thirteenth century and spread through the Marche and neighboring districts of central Italy, founding additional monasteries during Sylvester’s lifetime. He governed the community as its first abbot and was credited by contemporaries with miracles and with a gift of spiritual counsel. He died at Monte Fano on 26 November 1267.
Devotion to Sylvester developed locally after his death. His cult was formally recognized when Pope Clement VIII canonized him in 1598. His feast is observed on 26 November, particularly by the Sylvestrine Benedictines and in the dioceses of the Marche associated with his life and foundations.
