Biography

Short Description

Sylvester of the River Obnora, also known as Sylvester of Obnora or Silvester Obnorsky, was a Russian Orthodox monk, hermit, and abbot of the fourteenth century. He is numbered among the disciples of Saint Sergius of Radonezh and among the ascetics of the northern Russian forests sometimes called the Northern Thebaid. No reliable source records his year or place of birth, his family, or any events of his life before he entered monastic life. The surviving tradition begins with his formation at the Trinity Monastery of Saint Sergius, in the forests north of Moscow, where he lived under Sergius’s direction and was trained in the communal rule and in the practice of inner prayer associated with that house.

With the blessing of Sergius, Sylvester left the Trinity Monastery to seek solitude. He settled on the banks of the Obnora, a tributary of the Kostroma River, in the wooded country of what is now Vologda Oblast. There he lived as a hermit, combining manual labor with long hours of prayer. Other monks were in time drawn to him, a small community formed, and a monastery dedicated to the Resurrection of Christ was established on the site. Sylvester became its first abbot. The house later came to be known as the Sylvester Resurrection Monastery of Obnora. His way of life joined the cenobitic discipline learned from Sergius with the eremitical austerity typical of the northern wilderness settlements founded by Sergius’s disciples.

The traditional date of his death is 25 April 1379. He was buried at his monastery, and local veneration developed around his tomb. According to later monastic tradition, his relics were uncovered in 1645 during the building of a stone church and were described as incorrupt; they were thereafter kept in the monastery church. The monastery itself passed through periods of growth and decline, was affected by later secularizations, and was closed in the Soviet period. Saint Sylvester remained in the liturgical calendar of the Russian Orthodox Church, though he was never the object of a well-documented centralized canonization of the later, formal kind.

He is commemorated on 25 April in the Julian calendar used by the Russian Orthodox menologion, corresponding in the twentieth and twenty-first centuries to 8 May in the civil calendar. Contemporary documentary evidence for his life is sparse, as is common for many Russian monastic figures of the fourteenth century. What can be stated with confidence rests on synaxarion notices, the local tradition of the Obnora monastery, and his place in the well-attested circle of disciples of Sergius of Radonezh who founded hermitages and small monasteries across the Vologda, Kostroma, and Belozersk lands. He should not be confused with Paul of Obnora, another disciple of Sergius who also settled on the Obnora river system and founded a different monastery.
