Biography

Short Description

Sylvester I was Bishop of Rome from 314 until his death in 335, a pontificate that fell entirely within the reign of the emperor Constantine. The Liber Pontificalis describes him as a Roman, the son of a man named Rufinus, but it gives no trustworthy date of birth, and modern historians treat his early life as unknown. He succeeded Pope Miltiades and occupied the Roman see for twenty-one years, the period in which the Church passed from the aftermath of persecution into legal recognition and imperial patronage. Almost no authentic personal writings from his hand survive, so his biography must be reconstructed from later papal catalogues, a handful of contemporary notices, and a large body of legend that has to be used with caution.

The events of his pontificate that can be placed on reasonably firm ground belong to the Constantinian settlement of the Church. Major basilicas in Rome, including the Lateran, the Vatican basilica over the tomb of Peter, and the Sessorian church later known as Santa Croce in Gerusalemme, were built in these decades under imperial initiative. Later liturgical memory associated Sylvester with their dedication, though contemporary evidence for any personal architectural role on his part is thin. He did not attend the Council of Nicaea in 325; two Roman priests, Vitus and Vincentius, represented him, and he accepted the council’s creed and canons. Authentic correspondence between the Roman bishop and the imperial court at this date is scarce, and later forgeries, above all the medieval Donation of Constantine, cannot be treated as evidence for his policy or for any grant of temporal power.

Medieval hagiography greatly enlarged his life. Narratives that he baptized Constantine, cured the emperor of leprosy, and confined a dragon in the Roman Forum belong to the Actus Silvestri and related romances of the fifth century and after, not to fourth-century record. The Symmachian forgeries and the Donation tradition shaped his medieval image as the pope who received worldly authority from the first Christian emperor. Critical scholarship since the Renaissance has separated that legendary figure from the historical bishop, whose securely attested acts remain few. He is nonetheless the pope under whom the Roman church, newly secure, began to occupy the monumental landscape of the city and to function as a recognized authority in the wider imperial church.

He died in Rome on 31 December 335 and was buried in the cemetery of Priscilla on the Via Salaria, as recorded in the Liber Pontificalis. The Western Church has kept his feast on the day of his death since the early Middle Ages; Byzantine calendars commemorate him on 2 January. In 761 Pope Paul I translated relics to the church later called San Silvestro in Capite in Rome. He is venerated as a saint in the Catholic Church, the Eastern Orthodox Church, and some Anglican and Lutheran calendars. No formal process of canonization in the later medieval or modern sense is recorded; his cult rests on ancient liturgical commemoration rather than on a named act of a later pope. In much of Central and Eastern Europe the civil name of New Year’s Eve (Silvester) derives from his feast, a cultural association that should not be confused with a formally defined patronage.
