Biography

Short Description

Symeon of Trier, also known as Symeon of Syracuse, was a Greek monk, pilgrim, and recluse of the early eleventh century whose life joined the Byzantine East to the Latin Church of the Rhineland. He was born in Syracuse on Sicily to a Greek Christian family while the island was under Muslim rule. The principal near-contemporary source, a vita composed by Abbot Eberwin of St. Martin in Trier for the canonization process, states that his father was connected with Constantinople and had the boy sent there at about the age of seven to be educated. In the imperial capital Symeon received a Greek education and an Eastern Christian formation before leaving to pursue pilgrimage and ascetic withdrawal. No reliable source preserves an exact year of birth.

In the Holy Land he first served as a guide for pilgrims and then lived as a hermit in a tower beside the Jordan. He later entered cenobitic monastic life, spending time at a monastery in Bethlehem and afterwards at the monastery of Mount Sinai, where tradition holds that he was ordained deacon. From Sinai he was sent westward to collect alms promised by the duke of Normandy. The errand failed: the donor was already dead when Symeon arrived, and the monk suffered robbery and other hardships before he reached Trier and came to the notice of Archbishop Poppo.

Poppo took Symeon as a companion on a pilgrimage to Jerusalem, generally placed in the late 1020s. After their return, Symeon asked to be enclosed as a recluse. He was shut into a cell in the Porta Nigra, the great Roman north gate of Trier, and remained there in prayer and austerity until his death on 1 June 1035. Miracles were reported in his lifetime and at his tomb.

Archbishop Poppo forwarded an account of Symeon’s life and wonders to Rome. In 1042 Pope Benedict IX canonized him, an early instance of formal papal canonization. Part of the Porta Nigra was converted into a church, and a collegiate foundation, the Simeonstift, was established beside it. Symeon’s tomb became a local pilgrimage site in Trier. He is commemorated on 1 June in the Roman Martyrology and is also venerated in the Eastern Orthodox Church. Eberwin’s vita remains the main narrative source and reflects the testimony of people who had known the recluse.
