Biography
Blessed Symforian Ducki, baptized Feliks Ducki, was a Polish Capuchin lay brother numbered among the 108 Martyrs of World War II. He was born on 10 May 1888 in Warsaw, then under Russian imperial rule in the Polish territories. His parents were Jan Ducki and Marianna (née Lenart). As a young man he learned and practiced the tailor’s trade, the same craft he would later exercise inside the cloister.
In 1918 he entered the Capuchin novitiate at Nowe Miasto nad Pilicą and received the religious name Symforian. He professed as a lay brother rather than as a priest and spent more than two decades in Capuchin houses in Poland, above all in Warsaw, working as a tailor and in other humble domestic tasks. Those who knew him remembered a quiet, prayerful friar, devoted to the Eucharist and to the Blessed Virgin Mary, who accepted ordinary work without complaint and lived the Franciscan ideal of simplicity.
After the German invasion of Poland in 1939, religious communities came under intense pressure from the occupation authorities. Brother Symforian was arrested by the Gestapo, held in prison, and deported to the Auschwitz concentration camp. There he endured starvation, forced labor, and the camp’s systematic brutality. He died at Auschwitz on 11 April 1942. Like most prisoners murdered there, he has no known grave.
On 13 June 1999, during a pastoral visit to Poland, Pope John Paul II beatified him in Warsaw together with 107 other Polish victims of Nazi persecution—bishops, priests, men and women religious, and lay people killed in odium fidei. The group is commemorated liturgically on 12 June. Blessed Symforian is remembered as a witness that hidden fidelity in religious life, crowned by martyrdom, belongs to the Church’s testimony in the twentieth century.
