Biography

Short Description

Saint Symphorian (Latin: Symphorianus) was a Christian martyr of Autun, the ancient Augustodunum, in Roman Gaul, and one of the principal early saints of that city. According to the traditional passio he was born at Autun to a family of high rank. The legend names his father Faustus and his mother Augusta, both Christians, and presents him as a young man carefully raised in the faith. No reliable source records the year of his birth. In the second and third centuries Autun was a major civic center of Gallia Lugdunensis, still marked by public pagan cults, including the worship of Cybele, honored in Gaul as Berecynthia.

The surviving martyrdom narrative, which scholars treat as a later hagiographical composition rather than a contemporary record, states that Symphorian refused to adore the image of Cybele when it was carried in festival through Autun. He was arrested and examined by a governor whom the passio calls Heraclius. He confessed himself a Christian and would not sacrifice. After imprisonment he was condemned to be beheaded. As he was led outside the city, his mother is said to have called to him from the walls, urging him not to fear death but to look to the living God, because death would open the way to true life. He was then executed outside Autun. The names of the officials, the legal setting, and the traditional assignment of the events to the reign of Marcus Aurelius (often given as 178) cannot be confirmed independently. A local martyrdom at Autun in the later second or the third century is as much as can be affirmed with caution.

Christians buried him in a tomb near the city. A church later rose over or beside his grave. In the fifth century Bishop Euphronius of Autun is credited with honoring the shrine, and in the sixth century Gregory of Tours attests the cult at Autun. The Abbey of Saint-Symphorien grew up in connection with his memory. His feast is 22 August, the date of the Roman Martyrology for the martyr of Autun. Medieval France widely adopted his name in church dedications and in place-names of the type Saint-Symphorien. He is patron of Autun. Like other martyrs of the early centuries he was venerated by popular cult and liturgy long before later formal processes of beatification and canonization; no medieval or modern pope is recorded as having canonized him.

Symphorian was a layman, not a member of a religious order, and the sources do not describe him as a cleric, bishop, pope, or patriarch. The passio depicts him as a youth still in his parents' household and does not mention a wife or children. Beyond Autun and the churches that bear his name, later lists sometimes associate him with the young, but such extensions are less firmly grounded than his ancient local cult. The historical figure, so far as he can be reached behind the legend, belongs to the early Christian community of a major Gallic city and to the memory of those who died for refusing the civic and imperial cults of the Roman world.
