Biography

Short Description

Saint Syrus of Pavia, known in Italian as San Siro, is venerated in the Catholic Church as the first bishop of Pavia, the ancient Roman municipium of Ticinum in the Po valley of northern Italy. Virtually no detail of his life can be confirmed from contemporary records. The written traditions about him belong to the Middle Ages, above all to a Vita Sancti Syri and related texts that were composed or recast between the eighth and fourteenth centuries. In the most familiar legendary cycle, Syrus is an Eastern Christian who had personal contact with the apostolic generation. One version presents him as a youth from the region of Jerusalem who encountered Jesus and later became a follower of Saint Peter, accompanying the apostle to Rome before being dispatched to evangelize Cisalpine Gaul. Another version links him to the church of Aquileia, making him a missionary sent by Saint Hermagoras, the legendary disciple of Saint Mark. These stories, whatever their historical value, were designed to give the Pavian church an apostolic foundation.

According to the same hagiographical tradition, Syrus preached across the cities of the Po plain, converted large numbers of pagans, overthrew idols, and performed miracles of healing and of raising the dead. He is said to have established the Christian community of Ticinum and to have become its first bishop, sometimes with Saint Juventius (Giovenzio) as companion, co-worker, or successor. The Roman Martyrology, following this tradition, commemorates him on 9 December as the first bishop of Pavia and as one who is said to have been a disciple of the Apostle Peter and to have been illustrious for many miracles. Local legend further credits him with missionary activity in neighboring centers and even with a role in the early Christian topography of Milan, where a church of San Siro later stood. None of these episodes can be verified independently.

Critical historiography treats the first-century, apostolic Syrus as a pious construction rather than a documented biography. There is no reliable evidence for an organized Christian community at Pavia in the apostolic age, and the earliest bishops of the see who can be placed with any confidence belong to later centuries. Medieval catalogues of the bishops of Pavia nevertheless open with Syrus, and his cult is certainly ancient. By the eighth century his relics were already being translated and honored; the city’s original cathedral, dedicated to Saints Gervasius and Protasius and later known as San Siro, was regarded as his burial church. The figure of an apostolic founder served the prestige of the Pavian church in its relations with Milan and other Lombard sees. A distinct saint of the same name, Syrus of Genoa, a fourth-century bishop, is sometimes confused with him in popular devotion but belongs to a different see and feast.

The relics associated with Syrus of Pavia were in time transferred to the present cathedral, the Duomo of Pavia, where they remain an object of veneration. He is honored as principal patron of the city of Pavia and of its diocese. His feast is kept on 9 December. Beyond the medieval vitae, the Martyrology, the episcopal lists, and the continuous local cult, the historical person behind the legend cannot be reconstructed with any precision; even the century of his death, if a historical bishop of that name existed, remains uncertain. What can be said with assurance is that from the early Middle Ages onward the church of Pavia has claimed Syrus as its first shepherd and has centered a substantial part of its civic and liturgical identity on his memory.
