Biography

Short Description

Sysoj Shymnik, known in Church Slavonic and later Orthodox usage as the Venerable Sisoy (also Sisoe or Sysoy) the Schema-monk, was a monk of the Kiev Pechersk Lavra, the Monastery of the Caves at Kyiv. He belongs to the group of ascetics whose relics lie in the Far Caves, also called the Caves of St. Theodosius. Surviving sources do not record his birthplace, parentage, or the year of his birth. Liturgical calendars and later hagiographical notices customarily place his life in the thirteenth century, in the period when the Lavra continued its monastic life through the political upheavals of Kievan Rus', including the Mongol sack of Kyiv in 1240. No contemporary vita or chronicle entry dedicated to him has been identified, and the historical record consists chiefly of his name, his rank as a schema-monk, the location of his relics, and his inclusion in the synaxis of the Far Caves fathers.

The designation “Shymnik” (skhimnik) indicates that he had been tonsured into the great schema, the most rigorous form of Orthodox monastic profession. Schema-monks traditionally withdrew from even the ordinary communal duties of the monastery in order to devote themselves to fasting, vigil, and prayer, often in the underground cells of the caves. Later tradition remembered Sysoj as one who practiced this hidden life. Nothing further is related about particular miracles during his lifetime, spiritual counsel he may have given, or the circumstances of his death. His relics were laid in the Far Caves, where they have remained an object of veneration for Orthodox pilgrims visiting the Lavra.

The Eastern Orthodox Church commemorates him on 24 October according to the Julian calendar, a date that falls on 6 November in the Gregorian civil calendar for churches that retain the old calendar for fixed feasts. He is also remembered on 28 August (Julian) at the Synaxis of the Venerable Fathers of the Far Caves of the Kiev Pechersk Lavra. These commemorations are observed in the Russian Orthodox Church, the Ukrainian Orthodox churches, and other jurisdictions that keep the Kiev Caves menologion. He did not serve as a bishop, patriarch, or pope, and no medieval or modern source attributes to him a defined patronage of a city, trade, illness, or social group beyond his place among the cave saints of Kyiv.

Because the Kiev Caves saints were glorified through long-standing local veneration of their relics and through gradual insertion into liturgical calendars rather than through a single, well-documented act of canonization by a named pope or patriarch in the Western sense, no individual canonizing authority is recorded for Sysoj Shymnik. He is honored as a venerable monastic saint (prepodobny) of the Eastern Orthodox tradition. No evidence exists that he was married or had children; the great schema presupposes a life of monastic celibacy. Details of his burial beyond the Far Caves themselves are not independently documented outside the Lavra’s own tradition.
