Biography

Short Description

Tadeoz Stepantsmindeli is a figure whose name is Georgian in form: Tadeoz is the Georgian rendering of Thaddeus, and the epithet Stepantsmindeli is a toponymic meaning “of Stepantsminda.” In Georgian ecclesiastical usage such epithets commonly identify a monk, cleric, or locally venerated person with a particular holy place rather than functioning as a modern family surname. Stepantsminda itself (also known in later centuries as Kazbegi) lies in the high Caucasus of northeastern Georgia, in the historic highland country of Khevi, at the foot of Mount Kazbek. The settlement takes its name from Saint Stephen, and the surrounding landscape is dominated in religious memory by the Gergeti Trinity Church and by older mountain shrines along the Georgian Military Road. A person styled Stepantsmindeli is therefore associated, at least by later tradition or by place of activity, with this highland Christian milieu rather than with the better-documented urban sees of Mtskheta, Tbilisi, or Kutaisi.

The personal name Tadeoz points to the Caucasus-wide cult of the apostle Thaddeus (Jude), whom Armenian and Georgian traditions, in differing forms, connect with the earliest preaching of Christianity in the region, sometimes in association with the apostle Bartholomew and with the Edessene cycle of Addai/Thaddeus. That apostolic name was reused across medieval and early modern Georgia for monks, priests, and copyists. It does not, by itself, identify the bearer with the apostle, nor with the better-known Thaddeus of Edessa. Standard lists of the Catholicos-Patriarchs of Georgia, of the bishops of Rome, and of the Coptic popes of Alexandria do not include a Tadeoz Stepantsmindeli, and he should not be confused with those offices or with the Syrian Fathers of the sixth century (Ioane Zedazneli, Shio Mgvimeli, Davit Garejeli, and their companions), none of whom bears this epithet.

Widely accessible historical and hagiographical sources in the major scholarly languages do not preserve a securely dated vita, synaxarion notice, or archival biography for this specific individual. Birth and death years, places of birth and burial, monastic profession, and any feast day are not established in the reference works against which a cautious hagiographer can check claims. Georgian local calendars, unpublished manuscript colophons, or parish memory at Stepantsminda and Gergeti may retain additional notices, but those have not been corroborated here. In the absence of such corroboration it would be improper to assign him a century, an office, a martyrdom, or a set of patronages by analogy with other highland saints of Khevi and Pshavi-Khevsureti.

What can be said with restraint is therefore limited to onomastics and geography: a male Christian of Georgian tradition, named for the apostle Thaddeus and linked by epithet to Stepantsminda, who was neither pope nor catholicos-patriarch in the documented succession of those sees. Further reconstruction of his life, cult, or writings must wait on primary Georgian sources rather than on inference from the better-known saints who share either his baptismal name or his mountain district.
