Biography

Short Description

Saint Tarcisius, also spelled Tarsicius, is an early Christian martyr associated with the city of Rome. Virtually nothing about his life can be established from documents of his own time. The earliest and most important testimony is a short verse epitaph composed in the later fourth century by Pope Damasus I, who governed the Roman church from 366 to 384. Damasus had the poem placed in the Catacombs of Saint Callixtus on the Appian Way, where Tarcisius had been buried. In it the pope recounts that a frenzied group attacked Tarcisius while he was carrying the sacraments of Christ, and that Tarcisius preferred to be struck down and to surrender his life rather than hand over the heavenly gifts to raging dogs. Damasus explicitly compared Tarcisius with Saint Stephen, the first martyr, who was a deacon. That comparison has led some modern historians to argue that Tarcisius himself may have been a deacon rather than the youthful acolyte of later legend, though the evidence is too thin to decide the question.

Later Roman tradition, crystallized in the Roman Martyrology, presents Tarcisius as an acolyte who was taking the Eucharist to Christians confined in prison. According to that account, pagans met him on the Appian Way, demanded to know what he was carrying, and, when he refused to disclose or surrender the sacrament, beat him with sticks and stones until he died. The Martyrology adds that those who searched his body did not find the Eucharist. The year of the martyrdom is not recorded in any early source. Many hagiographers have placed it in the mid-third century, during the persecution launched by the emperor Valerian, when Pope Sixtus II, Saint Lawrence, and many other Roman clergy were killed and when the secret conveyance of the Eucharist to prisoners would have been a known pastoral practice. A few older writers preferred the brief pagan restoration under Julian the Apostate in the 360s, but that dating sits uneasily with Damasus’s inscription and is generally set aside.

The familiar image of Tarcisius as a boy of about twelve is not found in Damasus and appears to be a later development. It was given wide circulation by the historical novel Fabiola, published in 1854 by Cardinal Nicholas Wiseman. Wiseman’s portrayal of a child who dies rather than let the Blessed Sacrament be profaned shaped Catholic art, catechesis, and devotion from the later nineteenth century onward. In that form Tarcisius became a model for children preparing for First Communion and for those serving at the altar.

Tarcisius was originally interred in the cemetery of Callistus. In subsequent centuries relics attributed to him were translated to churches in Rome, including San Silvestro in Capite. His name is entered in the Roman Martyrology on 15 August, the same date as the Assumption of Mary. He is invoked as a patron of altar servers, acolytes, and first communicants. Beyond these liturgical and devotional facts, the historical Tarcisius remains an obscure figure whose courage in protecting the Eucharist is known almost solely through Damasus’s verses and the piety that grew up around them.
