Biography

Short Description

Tassilo III was the last Agilolfing duke of Bavaria, a duchy that in the eighth century still possessed its own ruling house, law, and episcopal organization while acknowledging a measure of Frankish overlordship. He was the son of Duke Odilo of Bavaria and of Hiltrud, a daughter of Charles Martel, and therefore a nephew of King Pepin the Short and a first cousin of Charlemagne. Odilo died in 748, when Tassilo was still a child. In the succession crisis that followed, Grifo, a half-brother of Pepin, attempted to seize Bavaria; Pepin intervened, expelled Grifo, and installed the young Tassilo as duke, with Hiltrud acting as regent. From the outset, then, Tassilo’s title depended in part on Frankish confirmation even as Bavaria remained a distinct political community. In 757, at Compiègne, he swore fidelity to Pepin and to Pepin’s sons, an oath later treated by Carolingian writers as proof of vassalage.

In his adult reign Tassilo combined frontier warfare, dynastic alliance, and ecclesiastical patronage. He married Liutperga, daughter of Desiderius, king of the Lombards, a match that tied Bavaria to a power frequently at odds with the Franks. He campaigned on the eastern Alpine and Pannonian borders against Slavic groups, including the Carantanians, and against the Avars, presenting himself as a Christian prince defending and extending the duchy. He founded or richly endowed monasteries, of which Kremsmünster Abbey, established in 777 in what is now Upper Austria, is the best known; a surviving eighth-century liturgical chalice associated with his name is an important work of early medieval metalwork. Innichen (San Candido) in the Puster Valley is another house connected with his rule. These foundations strengthened ducal prestige, missionary activity, and control of Alpine routes, while remaining within Latin, Roman-rite Christianity.

Conflict with the Carolingian monarchy sharpened after Charlemagne became sole king of the Franks. Frankish annals charge Tassilo with having abandoned a campaign in Aquitaine in 763—an act they term harisliz, desertion of the host—and with later conspiring with the Avars and his Lombard kin. Historians treat these accusations cautiously, because the principal narratives were composed at the Frankish court and served to justify the annexation of Bavaria. Further oaths and hostages were arranged in 781. In 787 Charlemagne advanced with a large army toward the Lech; Tassilo appealed to Pope Adrian I, who sided with the Frankish king. Facing superior force, Tassilo submitted, renewed commitments, and surrendered hostages, including his son Theodo.

In 788 Tassilo was summoned to the assembly at Ingelheim, accused of infidelity, condemned, and spared death only by forced tonsure and confinement in a monastery. His sons Theodo and Theodbert were likewise tonsured; Liutperga and their daughters were sent to convents. Bavaria was placed under Frankish counts and absorbed into Charlemagne’s kingdom, ending Agilolfing rule. In 794, at the synod of Frankfurt, Tassilo was brought from monastic custody to renounce publicly all claims for himself and his descendants, after which he vanishes from the political record. The precise place of his death is not securely recorded; he is generally thought to have died in the later 790s while still a monk, possibly in a Frankish abbey such as Lorsch or Jumièges. He was not canonized or beatified and has no established feast day or official cult. Carolingian sources depict a faithless vassal; later Bavarian tradition has sometimes remembered him as the last independent duke of a native line. The documentary basis for his final years remains thin and one-sided.
