Biography

Short Description

Saint Tatiana of Rome is a Christian martyr of the third century, venerated in the Eastern Orthodox Church and the Roman Catholic Church. According to her traditional passio, she was born in Rome to a family of high official rank. Her father was a Roman civil servant who was a Christian in secret and raised her in that faith. Tatiana herself took up a life of consecrated service and was made a deaconess of the Roman church, occupying herself with prayer, fasting, and care for the sick and the poor.

During a persecution of Christians in Rome under the emperor Alexander Severus (reigned 222–235), she was arrested and ordered to sacrifice to the pagan gods, in particular at a temple of Apollo. The hagiography relates that she prayed and made the sign of the cross, after which the idol shattered and part of the temple collapsed. She was then subjected to a succession of tortures: her flesh was torn with iron hooks or combs, her eyes were put out, she was beaten, exposed to wild beasts that according to the legend would not harm her, and thrown into fire from which she emerged unharmed.

She was finally beheaded, together with her father, who had also been arrested. The traditional date of her martyrdom is 12 January, in a year given variously as 226 or 235. Modern historians treat the detailed acts as largely legendary, as is common with many Roman martyr passions written or expanded in later centuries, but her name stands in early martyrologies and her cult is ancient.

In the Roman Martyrology her feast is 12 January. The Eastern Orthodox Church commemorates her on the same date (25 January in churches that follow the Julian calendar). She is especially venerated in Russia, where the coincidence of her feast with the foundation of Moscow University in 1755 made her the patron saint of students; Tatiana Day remains a traditional student holiday. Relics attributed to her have been claimed by various churches over the centuries.
