Biography

Short Description

Saint Tegulus, known in Italian as San Tegulo or San Tegolo, is a Christian martyr whose cult is centered on the city of Ivrea in Piedmont, in northwestern Italy. He is recognized as a saint in the Roman Catholic Church, though he does not appear in the general Roman Martyrology and his veneration has always been essentially local. Virtually no contemporary documentation of his life survives. What is known of him comes from late medieval and early modern hagiographical tradition, from the history of his relics, and from the liturgical calendar of the Diocese of Ivrea. As with many obscure martyrs of late antiquity, the historical Tegulus—if he was a distinct individual who died for the Christian faith in the Ivrea region—cannot be reconstructed in any biographical detail. Dates of birth and death, family origin, and the precise manner of his execution are all unknown.

A tradition recorded in the early modern period identifies Tegulus as a soldier of the Theban Legion. According to the legend of Saint Maurice, that legion was composed of Christian troops recruited in the Thebaid of Egypt and was stationed in the Alps in the late third century, during the reign of the emperor Maximian. When the legion refused to offer sacrifice to the pagan gods, it was decimated and then massacred at Agaunum, the present-day Saint-Maurice in Switzerland. Hagiographers subsequently claimed that a number of legionaries escaped the slaughter and were hunted down and killed in other localities of the western Alps and the Po valley. Tegulus is one of several north Italian saints—among them Bessus, Constantius of Oze, and others—who were later attached to this cycle. In this version of his story, Tegulus fled southward, was captured near Ivrea, and suffered martyrdom there. Critical scholarship treats the Theban Legion as a literary and cultic construct of the fifth century and later, and regards the assignment of local martyrs to the legion as a common medieval device for enhancing their prestige rather than as a statement of historical fact.

The material focus of Tegulus’s cult is a set of relics preserved in the cathedral of Ivrea. In 1584, during work on a church dedicated to Saint Lawrence that stood outside the city walls, remains identified as those of Saint Tegulus were discovered. The bishop of Ivrea at that time had the relics translated into the cathedral, where they became an object of local devotion. The invention and translation of the relics occurred in the climate of the Catholic Reformation, when bishops were encouraged to recover and promote the cults of early martyrs associated with their sees. No earlier vita or passio of Tegulus is known to have circulated, which indicates that the written legend was probably composed or expanded in connection with the sixteenth-century discovery. In art he is customarily shown as a Roman soldier, sometimes with the palm of martyrdom.

Tegulus is commemorated on 11 September in the proper calendar of the Diocese of Ivrea. He has not been the object of a formal process of canonization in the modern sense; like other ancient martyrs, he belongs to the category of saints whose cult was established by popular and episcopal veneration long before the reservation of canonization to the Holy See. There is no reliable evidence that he held any ecclesiastical office, that he belonged to a religious order, or that he was married or had children. He is not counted among the popes or among the patriarchs of the Eastern churches. Because the sources are late and legendary, claims about his Egyptian origin, his military career, and the exact year of his death cannot be verified from independent historical evidence. His significance lies in the local religious history of Ivrea and in the broader pattern of Theban Legion cults that spread through the Alpine regions in the Middle Ages.
