Biography

Short Description

Saint Teilo (Welsh Teilo; Latin Teliavus or Teliarus; also known as Eliud) was a sixth-century British Christian monk, abbot, and bishop whose cult became one of the most extensive among the early saints of Wales and Brittany. Almost everything that can be said of his life depends on much later sources, above all the Vita Sancti Teliavi composed in the twelfth century in the circle of Urban, bishop of Llandaff, and on the related Book of Llandaff. Those texts were written to enhance the prestige and territorial claims of Llandaff and cannot be treated as contemporary biography. According to this tradition Teilo was born at Penalun, now Penally near Tenby in Pembrokeshire, in the kingdom of Dyfed. He is named as the son of Ensych (or Usyllt) and is genealogically linked in later Welsh sources with other leading saints, including as a relative of Saint David. He is said to have studied under Saint Dubricius (Dyfrig) at Hentland (Henllan) on the Wye and later under Saint Paulinus at Whitland, and to have been a companion of David. A well-known but legendary episode has Teilo, David, and Saint Padarn travelling to Jerusalem, where they were consecrated bishops by the patriarch.

The historical Teilo is best understood as a monastic founder and bishop in south-west Wales. His chief house was Llandeilo Fawr on the River Tywi in Carmarthenshire, whose name means “the great church of Teilo.” From that centre a network of churches dedicated to him spread across Dyfed, Ystrad Tywi, and Gwent. The twelfth-century Book of Llandaff presents him as bishop of Llandaff and successor to Dubricius, but historians regard that succession as an anachronism: a territorial diocese of Llandaff in the later medieval sense did not exist in the sixth century, and Teilo’s authentic activity belongs rather to Llandeilo Fawr and the surrounding region. Place-names of the Llandeilo type and numerous medieval dedications show that his cult was especially strong in what became the dioceses of Llandaff and St Davids.

Hagiography relates that during the Yellow Plague of Rhos, an epidemic conventionally placed in the mid-sixth century, Teilo led followers across the sea to Armorica (Brittany) and resided with Saint Samson at Dol. Breton tradition associates him with several foundations, including Landeleau and Saint-Thélo, and his name survives in a number of Breton parish dedications. After a stay of some years—seven according to the Vita—he returned to Wales. While the details of this exile are not independently verifiable, the later strength of Teilo’s cult in Brittany is genuine and indicates early contact or at least early transmission of his legend between Wales and Armorica.

Teilo’s feast is kept on 9 February. Tradition places his death at Llandeilo Fawr, though the year is unknown. Three communities—Llandaff, Llandeilo Fawr, and Penally—claimed his relics. The Vita explains the conflict by a miracle in which three identical bodies appeared, so that each church might possess the saint. A tomb ascribed to him remains in Llandaff Cathedral; a reliquary skull known as the head of Teilo was long preserved there and used in oaths and folk healing. Teilo was venerated as a saint long before the age of papal canonization; there was no formal process of beatification or canonization. His cult is documented in Welsh calendars, in the liturgy of Llandaff, and in Brittany. Because the written lives are late and tendentious, the sixth-century person remains obscure in outline, but the distribution of dedications in south Wales and Brittany confirms that he was among the most important saints of the early Welsh church.
