Biography

Short Description

Telesphorus was Bishop of Rome in the early second century, traditionally counted as the eighth pope and as the seventh successor of Saint Peter. Ancient episcopal lists place his tenure in the reign of the emperor Hadrian and at the opening of the reign of Antoninus Pius. Later catalogues, including the Liberian Catalogue of 354 and the chronological notices in Eusebius of Caesarea, assign him an episcopate of about eleven years ending around 136–138. He succeeded Sixtus I and was followed by Hyginus. The earliest substantial witness to his place in the Roman succession is Irenaeus of Lyons, writing in the later second century, who names Telesphorus in the list of Roman bishops in Against Heresies. The Roman church of that period was still largely Greek-speaking, which is consistent with the later claim that Telesphorus himself was a Greek, though no second-century source records his birthplace or family.

Irenaeus uniquely singles Telesphorus out among the early successors of Peter as one who also suffered a glorious martyrdom. That brief notice is the principal ancient testimony that he died a martyr; later Roman tradition accepted the claim, and he is commemorated as a martyr in the Roman Martyrology. No contemporary narrative of the circumstances of his death survives, and the precise date, the place within the city, and any imperial agency behind an execution are not recorded in second-century sources. Eusebius, drawing on earlier lists, likewise includes Telesphorus in the Roman succession and associates the end of his episcopate with the beginning of Antoninus Pius’s reign. Nothing written by Telesphorus is known to survive, and no reliable account of his teaching or pastoral acts can be recovered from contemporary evidence.

The sixth-century Liber Pontificalis describes Telesphorus as a Greek and attributes to him several liturgical institutions: a seven-week fast before Easter, the celebration of Easter on Sunday, a midnight Mass at Christmas, and the singing of the Gloria in Excelsis Deo. Modern historians treat these ascriptions with caution and generally regard them as later retrojections. The emergence of Christmas as a feast, the liturgical history of the Gloria, and the development of a forty-day or seven-week Lenten fast all point to periods later than the mid-second century. The same source states that he was buried near the body of Saint Peter on the Vatican Hill, a claim consistent with the burial tradition of other early Roman bishops but not independently confirmed for Telesphorus. Local Italian tradition later associated his origin with Terranova da Sibari in Calabria; that localization is not found in the earliest recensions of the papal catalogue and remains unverified.

Later hagiographical tradition, especially among the Carmelites, portrayed Telesphorus as having lived as a hermit on Mount Carmel before coming to Rome. That story is not supported by early evidence and reflects medieval orders’ interest in apostolic or sub-apostolic founders rather than second-century fact. His cult in the Latin Church is nonetheless ancient. His feast is kept on 5 January in the Roman Martyrology. He appeared in the General Roman Calendar until the revision of 1969, after which his commemoration remained in the Martyrology. Little else can be verified about his life, administration, or death. His historical importance rests chiefly on Irenaeus’s attestation of the Roman episcopal list and of his martyrdom, which together place him among the few second-century bishops of Rome about whom a specific biographical notice, however brief, was already circulating within a generation or two of his death.
