Biography

Short Description

Teobaldo Roggeri, also known in English as Saint Theobald of Alba, was a twelfth-century Italian layman whose reputation for holiness grew from a life of manual work, pilgrimage, and almsgiving rather than from clerical office or membership in a religious order. Traditional accounts place his birth in 1099 at Vico, a hamlet belonging to the city of Alba in Piedmont, in what is now the province of Cuneo in northern Italy. Hagiographical sources describe his family as comparatively well-to-do. After the death of his parents he is said to have given away his inheritance to the poor and to have chosen evangelical poverty in place of a comfortable station. He settled in Alba and earned his living as a cobbler, a trade with which his later cult would remain closely associated.

At some point he undertook the long pilgrimage to the shrine of Saint James at Santiago de Compostela in Galicia, one of the principal penitential journeys of Western Christendom in the twelfth century. Upon returning to Alba he continued in humble occupations. Besides shoemaking he is remembered as having worked as a porter or day laborer, carrying sacks of grain and other loads. Contemporary and later tradition emphasize his humility, his care for the needy, and a reputation for personal holiness already during his lifetime. He remained unmarried and is not recorded as having had children; his sanctity was that of a celibate lay artisan rather than of a monk or priest.

Teobaldo died in Alba on 1 June 1150 and was buried in the city. A local cult developed around his tomb, and relics associated with him came to be kept in Alba’s cathedral, the Duomo of San Lorenzo. Over the following centuries he was invoked as heavenly patron of the city of Alba and of cobblers and shoemakers. His feast is kept on 1 June. The Holy See later recognized the ancient local veneration: Pope Pius XI confirmed the cult of Teobaldo Roggeri on 21 December 1933, an act of equipollent beatification. He was never a pope or patriarch, never belonged to a religious order, and is remembered as a lay saint of Piedmont whose example was that of ordinary work joined to pilgrimage and charity.
