Biography
Teodosie de la Brazi, venerated in the Romanian Orthodox Church as the Holy Hierarch Martyr Theodosius of Brazi (Sfântul Ierarh Mucenic Teodosie de la Brazi), was a seventeenth-century Orthodox monk and bishop whose memory is tied to the Church in the Principality of Moldavia and to the Monastery of Brazi in the Vrancea region of the eastern Carpathians. The year and place of his birth are not established by surviving contemporary documents that can be cited with certainty. Later ecclesiastical accounts place him in the first half of the seventeenth century in the Romanian lands, but they do not yield a verified birth year or a securely documented birth town, and those particulars must therefore be left open. He is known to history chiefly through his brief service as a hierarch and through the tradition of his violent death at Brazi.
According to the received account of the Romanian Orthodox Church, Teodosie entered monastic life and rose in the hierarchy of Moldavia. He is recorded as Bishop of Rădăuți toward the end of the 1660s and as Metropolitan of Moldavia around 1670. The metropolitanate of Moldavia was then the principal Orthodox see of the principality, under the distant canonical authority of the Patriarchate of Constantinople and in constant dealing with the Moldavian princely court. His tenure as metropolitan was short and politically unstable. Seventeenth-century Moldavia was marked by frequent changes of princes, boyar faction, and the pressure of Ottoman suzerainty; bishops were often installed and removed as court alignments shifted. Teodosie was deposed from the metropolitan throne and thereafter lived as a monk. Church tradition links him with the Monastery of Brazi, which he is said to have restored or governed, and it is from that house that he takes the designation de la Brazi.
In 1694, during a period of raids and disorder in the region, Teodosie was seized at Brazi Monastery. Hagiographical tradition holds that he was tortured in an effort to force him to reveal the hiding place of the monastery’s treasure or valuables, and that he was put to death when he would not yield. The date of his death is given in the Church’s commemoration as 22 September 1694. He is therefore honored as a hieromartyr, that is, an ordained hierarch who died under violence in circumstances the Church has received as martyrdom. His relics and cult remained associated with Brazi Monastery, which became the local centre of his veneration long before any synodal act of canonization. Brazi lies in present-day Vrancea County, Romania, in what was then the Moldavian sphere of the eastern Carpathian foothills.
The Holy Synod of the Romanian Orthodox Church formally proclaimed Teodosie de la Brazi a saint in 2003 and assigned him the feast day of 22 September. He is listed among the hierarch-martyrs of the Romanian Orthodox calendar. He was never Bishop of Rome or Coptic Pope of Alexandria, nor did he hold the office of patriarch or catholicos of an autocephalous see; his highest recorded office was the metropolitanate of Moldavia. As a monastic hierarch he is treated in the sources as celibate. Independent archival evidence for many personal details of his life remains sparse, and the passion narrative as it is now told combines historical notices of a deposed metropolitan living at Brazi with later hagiographical elaboration. What can be said with reasonable confidence is that he was a Moldavian Orthodox metropolitan of the later seventeenth century, that he ended his life at Brazi Monastery in 1694 under violent circumstances remembered as martyrdom, and that the Romanian Orthodox Church has received him as a saint and martyr of that age.
