Biography

Teresa Bracco was born on 24 February 1924 in Santa Giulia, a hamlet of the comune of Dego in the province of Savona, Liguria, in northwestern Italy. She was the youngest of eight children of Giacomo Bracco and Anna Pizzorno. The family lived by farming, of modest means and of devout Catholic practice. She was baptized in the local parish church shortly after birth and later received First Communion and Confirmation there. Her early life was that of a rural Ligurian parish in the first half of the twentieth century, marked by regular participation in the sacraments and in popular devotion.

As a girl and young woman she was remembered for piety, frequent attendance at Mass, devotion to the Eucharist and to the Virgin Mary, and a reserved, industrious character. In 1939 she joined Catholic Action, the principal organized lay apostolate of the Italian Church at that time, and took part in its formation and activities among young people. She did not marry and did not enter a religious congregation. She remained at home, helping her family with agricultural work while leading a life of prayer and of deliberate moral seriousness according to Catholic teaching.

In 1944, during the German occupation of northern Italy and amid partisan warfare in the Ligurian hinterland, military roundups reached the Dego area. On 28 August 1944 German soldiers entered Santa Giulia. Teresa, then twenty years old, tried to flee into the woods with other inhabitants but was captured. A soldier attempted to rape her. She resisted and was killed by gunfire. Contemporary testimony and the later ecclesiastical judgment present her death as a refusal to submit to sexual violence and as martyrdom in defense of chastity. Her body was recovered afterward in the countryside.

Local veneration of Teresa Bracco as a virgin martyr grew in the years after the war. The cause for her beatification proceeded through diocesan and Roman phases, and Pope John Paul II beatified her on 24 May 1998 during a ceremony in Turin. The Church observes her feast on 28 August, the anniversary of her death. Her remains are kept in the parish church of Santa Giulia in Dego. She has not been canonized. She is remembered as a laywoman of the Diocese of Acqui and as one of the twentieth-century figures beatified for dying rather than consent to rape.
