Biography

Short Description

Teresa Chen Jinjie (also rendered Chen Jingjie) was a Chinese Catholic laywoman and martyr of the late Qing period. She was born in 1875 in northern China, in the region that is now Hebei province, into a family that already practiced the Catholic faith. In rural communities of that era, Chinese Catholic households often formed tight local networks around village chapels and visiting clergy, remaining a distinct minority amid the surrounding population. She is commemorated together with Rosa Chen Aijie, described in hagiographical sources as her younger sister. Almost nothing is recorded of Teresa’s education, work, or daily life, which is typical for village women of her background; later veneration rests on her death and on local Christian memory rather than on a detailed personal biography.

In 1900 the Yihetuan movement, known in the West as the Boxers, swept through Zhili and neighboring provinces. Combining martial ritual, anti-foreign feeling, and hostility to Christianity, Boxers and allied militia attacked mission stations and Chinese Christian villages. Hebei was among the worst-affected areas, and thousands of Chinese Catholics were killed, frequently after being offered the chance to apostatize. Teresa and Rosa were seized in the course of this violence. Accounts preserved in the later processes of the Church state that the two young women refused to deny their faith. Teresa, then about twenty-five years old, was put to death in 1900. She is honored as a virgin martyr, and no marriage or children are recorded.

The Holy See eventually assembled a representative group of 120 persons who had died for the faith in China between the mid-seventeenth and early twentieth centuries, among them 87 native Chinese and 33 foreign missionaries. Teresa Chen Jinjie was included in that number. Pope John Paul II canonized the entire group on 1 October 2000 in Saint Peter’s Square. The martyrs are celebrated jointly on 9 July in the General Roman Calendar, under the title of Augustine Zhao Rong and companions. Standard public sources do not assign Teresa an individual patronage, and the place of her burial is not recorded.

Her story, like those of many other Chinese lay martyrs of 1900, shows both how deeply Catholicism had taken root in certain rural families by the end of the nineteenth century and how high a price ordinary believers could be forced to pay when political crisis turned against the Church. Beyond the year of her birth, the year of her death, her status as an unmarried laywoman and virgin martyr, and her place among the canonized companions of Augustine Zhao Rong, the surviving historical record remains sparse.
