Biography

Short Description

Teresa del Niño Jesús y de San Juan de la Cruz was born Eusebia García y García on 5 March 1909 in Mochales, a village in the province of Guadalajara in central Spain. She came from a Catholic family of the rural Castilian interior, in a region where the Discalced Carmelite tradition remained part of ordinary religious life in the early twentieth century. As a young woman she entered the monastery of Discalced Carmelite nuns of San José in the city of Guadalajara, an enclosed community living according to the Teresian reform. She received the religious name Teresa of the Child Jesus and of Saint John of the Cross, which joined modern devotion to Thérèse of Lisieux with the heritage of John of the Cross. Thereafter she lived the regular observances of the Teresian Carmel: enclosure, the Divine Office, mental prayer, poverty, and the hidden work of the house, without an external apostolate.

The Guadalajara Carmel was a typical Spanish house of the Order in the first third of the twentieth century. Sister Teresa’s years in religion coincided with rising political conflict in Spain and with growing hostility toward the Church in parts of the Second Republic, but her own life remained that of a choir nun of ordinary observance. Material assembled for her later cause presents her as a young religious of simple piety and cheerful community spirit, not as an author, foundress, or public figure. She was the youngest of the three nuns of the same monastery who would be beatified together. By July 1936 she was a professed member of the community.

When the Spanish Civil War began in July 1936, Guadalajara lay in the Republican zone, where a violent anti-clerical campaign led to the killing of many priests, religious, and lay Catholics. The Carmelite monastery was no longer safe and the community was forced to leave the cloister. Sister Teresa remained with two companions from the same house: María Pilar de San Francisco de Borja (Jacoba Martínez García, born 1877) and María Ángeles de San José (Marciana Valtierra Tordesillas, born 1905). On 24 July 1936 the three women were recognized as religious, seized by militiamen, and shot in Guadalajara. Teresa del Niño Jesús y de San Juan de la Cruz was twenty-seven. The Holy See later judged that they had been killed in hatred of the faith. They belong to the large group of religious slain in the opening weeks of the war in that province.

Pope John Paul II beatified the three Discalced Carmelites of Guadalajara on 29 March 1987 in Rome. They were among the first women religious of the Spanish Civil War raised to the honors of the altar. Their liturgical memorial is kept on 24 July, the date of their death. They have not been canonized. Historical knowledge of Sister Teresa’s interior life is limited to the evidence of the beatification process; she left no substantial body of writings, and her public profile is that of a blessed martyr of the Teresian Carmel. Veneration is chiefly Carmelite and diocesan, recalling contemplative nuns who died at the beginning of the persecution of 1936 rather than a widely documented mystic or foundress.
